eball Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 Looking ahead at President's Trophy competition: Nashville plays 4 of 5 at home, beginning with Dee-twah tonight and Dallas Saturday. They finish with three non-playoff teams and could easily grab 8 or 9 of these 10 points. Detroit plays Nashville and Dallas back-to-back starting tonight, then finishes with home-and-homes vs. Columbus and Chicago. 10 points is certainly not out of the question, and 8 is probably a no-brainer. The PT will likely come right down to the wire. With 6 games remaining and a game in hand over Nashville, the Sabres will probably need at least 9 points. Here's hoping Dallas shows up tomorrow and Saturday. I don't think we really care who wins tonight, although a regulation win by one or the other is preferable. I don't REALLY care whether or not Buffalo wins the PT, but it does mean something and would be a first-time accomplishment for the franchise.

eball Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 Yes, we care. We want Detroit to win. Our magic number over Detroit is 10, as opposed to the 11 for Nashville. Good point. In any event, we don't want OT.
wjag Posted March 31, 2007 Author Report Posted March 31, 2007 Game 77 -- Specialty Teams - Specialty Buffalo was ahead 5-1 after 15 minutes in the first and the game was essentially over. They built that lead with two PPG and two SHGs and just an ordinary tally from Vanek. Derek Roy and Chris Drury had SHGs. The rest of the game was meaningless even though the Islanders made it respectable with three in the third. Final score was 6-4. NYI finsihed with three PPG; Buffalo had three. After playing for the last several weeks with few penalties being called, last night the box was almost never empty as both teams combined for 19 (Buffalo-10, NYI-9). Montreal lost a big chance to create some breathing room in their playoff hunt. Instead they fell behind by three and finished with a loss 3-2. Remarkably though they are still hanging on to the eight seed. NJ beats Philly to keep pace and move back into first place in the Atlantic. They are tied with Pittsburgh in points, but NJ has 46-45 wins claiming the first tie breaker. Tampa gets two big points by beating the free-falling Hurricanes. Canes have lost three straight games. Detroit had a three goal lead heading into the 3rd at home and lost in a shootout to Dallas. 5 Games remaining Buffalo vs Montreal NJ vs Rangers Atlanta vs Tampa Bay Ottawa vs Pittsburgh These are the magic points to win outright. No ties are considered. With 107 points Buffalo is now leading the President's Trophy race by one point over Detroit. Buffalo has a game in hand on both Nashville and Detroit. With the Buffalo win over NYI, the conference number is down to two. The divisional number is down to two as well. Buffalo leads the conference and the division by seven with five to play. The Sabres have clinched the 6th playoff spot so far. A win by Buffalo tonight clinches the conference and division. A loss by Ottawa would clinch the division as well. Playoff Berth:  Division: 2 Conference: 2 Presidents Trophy: 8 Points Left: 10 Playoff spot clinched to date: 6th:
JujuFish Posted March 31, 2007 Report Posted March 31, 2007 Counting ties, the magic number is 7 for the PT.
