January 30, 1977

 

The Sabres have made it back to snowbound Buffalo after the previous night's tie in Montreal, but this day's home game with the Los Angeles Kings is called off. The Blizzard of '77, which kills 29 people, rages on.

 

 

January 30, 1986

 

The Sabres trade Larry Playfair, Sean McKenna and Ken Baumgartner to the L.A. Kings for Brian Engblom and Doug Smith.

I'm not big on fighting in hockey, but since you mentioned him, I will say that IMHO Playfair was unquestionably the best pugilist the Sabres have ever had.

 

Sean McKenna would have been a good entry for the "obscure sabres" thread that was going around yesterday.
