Stoner Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 January 11, 1973 The New York Rangers become the first team during the 1972-73 season to win on Memorial Auditorium ice when they defeat the Sabres 4-2 to snap Buffalo's unbeaten streak at home at 21 (18-0-3), a record which survives to this day. As the Sabres skate off the ice at the end of the game, the sellout crowd serenades them with a chant of "Thank You Sabres! Thank You Sabres!" It wouldn't be the last time the team would hear those appreciative words. The Sabres would be thanked again after they were eliminated at the Aud by the mighty Montreal Canadiens in the first round of the playoffs, but not after putting a serious scare into the Habs. It was the first time the Sabres qualified for the playoffs in the short history of the franchise.
mphs mike Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 "Thank you Sabres" rolling down to the Aud ice as the Sabres-Habs were shaking hands in April '73 will always be one of my top 5 memories of this franchise. Unless you were there, listening on the radio/tv, or read about it the next day in the Courier Express you simply can't appreciate the emotion of that moment.

Going to a Sabres game in the early days through when they peaked in 74-75 was really something special. Hopefully the new generation of fans currently attending games and success of the team will help recapture some of that magic.
