apuszczalowski Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 isle of Capri does not get the liscense for the slot machines they wanted so no new arena funded by them. The also had Missassauga Buisnessman Basilles back out of his agreement to purchase the team after the league tried putting it in the deal that no matter what happens with an arena deal, they have t stay in Pittsburgh. He loses his deposit on them but says he is still interested, even with Lemieux saying the deal is dead. The owner of a small Canadian beer company wants to buy them and fund a new stadium in Pittsburgh so he can sell his beer their, he has connections to form NHLer's like Esposito who promote his beer in commercials. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=189123&hubname= The NHL seems to really be pushing to keep the team in Pittsburgh no matter how bad it gets. Forcing new potential owners to have clauses in the contract to keep the team in Pittsburgh even without a new arena. Makes you wonder if they really did "win the Sidney Crosby" sweepstakes or if the NHL made sure Crosby went their to try and revive a dying franchise. (sorry, just a personal conspiracy theory, after a struggling Pittsburgh team gets a couple really good picks for Malkin and Fleury, and then without the best odds, they also win the Crosby sweepstakes)
Hawerchuk Posted December 21, 2006 Report Posted December 21, 2006 We'll gladly have them relocate to Las Vegas if they wish! Man, I wish!! It'll have state of the art arena with video poker machines on the backs of the seats in front of you!
Bmwolf21 Posted December 21, 2006 Report Posted December 21, 2006 I thought I was the only one who felt the Pens' nabbing top-5 picks at an alarming rate was, at the very least, suspicious. A quick look at their roster reveals at least 5 top-5 picks since 2002 - with four of those being top-2 picks. They got Ryan Whitney (5th overall, 2002) Fleury (1st overall, 2003) Malkin (2nd overall, 2004) Crosby (1st overall, 2005) and Staal (2nd overall, 2006.) Granted, the Pens have been horrible over the last few years, but it is also in the league's interest to make sure that the Pens have a stable of young stars to help ensure the franchise's survival, and it looks like they did that. BTW, here is an updated link for the TSN story - apparently the story apus originally linked moved or they changed the URL.
EdwardSauve Posted December 21, 2006 Report Posted December 21, 2006 I've heard it said before and I'm hearing it said again that the Penguins will move to Kansas City. The casino is dead and Mario announced today that they will look to relocate. KC just built a brand new arena and some people are saying it would cost a new owner more to keep the team in Pittsburgh than it would be to move them. I wonder if they change the name back to the KC Scouts or if the Devils still own the name. The last 3 new NFL franchises used retro names for their teams. Titans, Browns, and Texans.
FogBat Posted December 22, 2006 Report Posted December 22, 2006 Whether you like the Pens as a secondary team or loathe them, moving the Pens will be a humongous loss for the city of Pittsburgh. They earned two Stanley Cups while they were there. No Stanley Cup winning franchise should ever move. It's tradition. As much as most of us can't stand the Maple Leafs, imagine just how much it would hurt Torontonians when a storied franchise like theirs (winning forty Stanley Golf Bags in a row) were to move to someplace like, say, Havana, Cuba. Wouldn't either scenario be a shock to everyone's system?
