December 19, 1970

Jacques Plante stops all 24 shots he faces as the Toronto Maple Leafs shut out the Sabres 2-0 at Maple Leaf Gardens. It's the seventh time in the franchise's first 30 games that the Sabres have been shut out. There's a measure of revenge for the Leafs: In the first meeting between the teams in November, also in the Gardens, former Leaf coach and GM Punch Imlach brought his scrubs up the QEW and spanked his old team, 7-2.

December 19, 1997

Dominik Hasek makes 42 saves and Donald Audette scores the game's only goal as the Sabres shut out the Montreal Canadiens 1-0 at Marine Midland Arena. It's Hasek's third shutout in December ? needless to say, there are more to come before the New Year.

December 19, 2003

It's another December to forget as the Sabres lose their seventh straight game, a 5-2 loss to New Jersey at HSBC Arena.

December 19, 2005

Ryan Miller returns from a broken thumb, and the Sabres defeat the Flyers in Philly in a shootout, 2-1. It's the team's seventh win in a row.

I don't know who considered that '70 team scrubs - this 9 year old still remembers many of those heroes - Capt. Floyd Smith, Eddie the Entertainer, Phil Goyette, Tracy Pratt, Joe Daley, Dave Dryden, and many more.

Well, you might have loved them, but they were scrubs. Not many of those guys formed the basis for success the team has just two years later. Still, it's basically a term of affection. I'm sure that's how the Leafs thought of the Sabres before that 7-2 game!
