Loudmouth Sabres Fans

RJ speculated that the Sabres might be picking up fans around the country... but I think it has to do more with the Buffalo diaspora... tens of thousands of people around the nation who left Buffalo in search of greener pastures after college or whatever. Because the team is doing so well I think they're going out of their way to get to the games. And by the sound of it, they're having a great time.

There always was a strong Buffalo contingent in certain arenas (DC and Atlanta come to mind immediately; Chicago, Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale, and Carolina aren't far behind), but this year, it's probably a little more than before. Awesome.

I was at the game tonight. I wore my white Campbell jersey (sluggo version). As I'm crossing a street to go from the parking lot to the forum, a white-haired guy in a white Chrysler 500 behind me at the light, rolls down his window and yells to me, "Is that a Campbell jersey?" I say "yes it is," turn around, and then do a double take to look back at him. He's still at the light, waves and says "Enjoy the game tonight."

It then hits me, and I say to my brother who is with me, "That's Tom Golisano!" My brother says that it sure looks like him. Meanwhile, the white Chrysler passes us on the way to the parking garage under the forum.

So we have a great time at the game, high-fiving many of the Sabres fans in attendance. After the game, as we're walking out, this older gentleman wearing a Sabres windbreaker walks pass me, he looks over and says, "Did you have a good time tonight?" Thinking that this is another another Buffalo fan, I say "I had a great time tonight!" and pat the guy on the back. As the guy strides past, it hits me again, that's Tom Golisano!

So I point the guy out to my brother, and tell him, I think that's Golisano, and my brother says it is him, because Larry Quinn is walking right next to him. (The League meetings were being held in Florida.) My brother then congratulated me for patting a billionaire on the back.

I then pointed Golisano and Quinn out to a couple of the many Sabres fans around us, and we started up the Let's Go Buffalo chant, at which point Golisano and Quinn were escorted to the elevators out of the building.

So all in all, it was a perfect hockey night. It was Dave Andreychuk appreciation night; it seemed like half the crowd were Buffalo fans (including several people around us); the Sabres bounced back with an extremely solid effort; and I had an encounter with the guys responsible for the current Sabres renaissance.

woot!

(whatever that means  )

If I recall correctly, it started out in a post about basketball back on usenet. They were trying to figure out what the hell the song that the Bulls played was. It was decided that it was "Whoot! There it is".

It spread to be a term used in some music newsgroups, and then wider on usenet. It started being used in geeky situations as an expression of joy/happiness/excitement.

It picked up popularity in internet gaming as an expression of happiness after getting a kill/winning a game.

Now, its pretty much widely used as an expression of happiness all over the net.

Western NYers are so hungry for a winner right now. In talking to people from WNY in the DC area the last few weeks, everyone was making plans to come see the Sabres, there was no question...Christmas parties and shopping be damned!

The Bills are history...see you in July. I follow St. John Fisher football closer right now. The Sabres success last year and coming out of the gate with 10 straight wins has WNY and ex-pats very excited and you're seeing it not just at HSBC, but on the road as well!

I think there are a lot of us spread around the country since the job market just isn't there back home especially in specialized fields. But I always go out of my way when they come to Cali and have adjusted my work schedule so I can get home in time to watch the games at 4 out here on Center Ice.

all in all i thought the fans were pretty tame last night (compared to the playoffs in raleigh last year) but there were still lightning fans complaining about the rowdy sabres fans. there were a ton of sabres fans in my area and the energy was awesome. even walking to the game in my vintage hawerchuk jersey one of the cops started talking to me about the sabres (he's originally from buffalo). all in all it's an unbelievable feeling to be in an opposing team's barn and feel like it's at home. i'd love to hear the players comments on it.

Wow - wouldn't TIVO be easier?

Get yourself a Tivo, Frisky! Stop getting up a o'dark-thirty just so you can get home to watch the game at 4! Tivo - greatest invention. Ever.

"Buffalo fans have officially passed flyers fans on my worst fans list...i will not attend another buffalo game probably ever....all they do is scream and yell...and they are soooo rude....they cant just sit and watch a game? without screaming LETS GOOO BUFFALOOO every 3 seconds right in your ear.....And why were there so many there??? had to be at least a good couple thousand of them....not enough words in this world can explain how annoyed I am right now..."

"Was it just me or did the Buffalo Bandwagon pull up to the IP tonight... man I never saw so many crisp new sweaters... Been going to Bolts games for the better part of the last 10-12 years... Never in my life have I ever seen so many BOOFalo Fans at a Bolts game...."

"Buffalo fans can be just as obnoxious and even worst then the Flyer fans. And of course their bandwagon is growing as they continue to win. 44 points and growing for them. "

"I will have to say that Buffalo Fans are correct in cheering their team. They have lost how many games this season? 4

Ummmmm, they are pretty darn good and you have to admit it. They have speed, skill and a dam good goalie to boot. Hello-probably most all of those fans just found the Sabres, that is what makes them annoying and irritating cause we know they will be back in their Lightning sweaters for the next game."

"Oh by all means they have the right to cheer...but while i was trying to watch the video for the ceremony...and trying to listen to rick talk...I have someone in my ear screaming LETS GO BUFFALO....so i basically heard nothing that entire ceremony...Thats when its rediculous..... "

"They were pretty obnoxious to say the least. Have never seen that many BananaSlugs jersey/hats in my life.

I just held up 1 finger and made a zero with the other hand. They weren't smart enough to figure it out. "

" sat next to some Buffey fans and they were pretty quiet all night. They did have some pretty smug self satisfied smiles on their faces though............... "

"Hey it is Easy to cheer for a winning Team,Any Band wagon Jumper can do that,Last Night was Proof of that.

There have NEVER Been that much Buffalo Shat in the palace, before,If you look up Front Runner, you will Find Buffalo Nation.

Buffalo has a Real good team,,,,,It is just their A-hole fans' I hate"

"Oh come on now!!!!! Don't post on the board when you are still wound up from the game. Fans are supposed to cheer for their team and if they have the endurance or the desire to do it for 60 minutes, then kudos to them!

And by the way, no one will ever surpass Cryers Fans as being the dregs of the NHL That we all can agree on! "

"It's easy to throw on a jersey and cheer for a winning team. Where were all of those Buffalo "fans" between 1999 and 2005? Hiding in their closet is my bet. It's not much different than the Lightning from 1997-2002 and then people started to become "fans".

If the Buffalo fans were really there because it was Dave Andreychuk night, you'd think that they could shut their mouths for 10 minutes and give the guy 10 minutes of respect. He gave the city 12 years of hockey and the crowd that showed from Buffalo treated him compelte disrespect.

And yes, the fans were rude, drunk and obnoxious...just like Philly fans. They didn't care that they were blocking my view of the game for the last 7 minutes. You can chant "Let's Go Buffalo" all you want, but put your [censored] in the seat. The ushers made 1 attempt, but the crowd wasn't cooperating. Half the people didn;t even have seats in that area, but that didn't seem to matter either.

Might just skip the game in March so I don't have to tolerate that crowd of low lifes again."

"You know what is really funny. As I am a Lightning fan first, and a Sabres fan second, last night was a great game, simply because I had so much fun with the Sabres fans! They were proud, and fun, and they weren't the ones chanting "Sabres Suck" when clearly the scoreboard showed that it was The Lightning who sucked. Lightning fans are some of the most obnoxious people I've ever met. Some of them can't figure out that it's bad karma to talk trash all the time, and some of them can't figure out that it doesn't matter how long you've been a fan of the team. Do you think the players give a [censored] how long a fan has been a fan? It doesn't make you special because you've been a fan longer than someone else. Congratulations to all you who think you're cool for having season tickets for the "whole time the Lightning has been around"...No one cares!! Loyalty for a team comes from your HEART, not your wallet!!! "

I'm going to speak from personal experience here, since I've been going to Sabres games in Tampa for over 10 years.

Last night was not much different than my other experiences there. I was able to get premium seats very easily (usually I sit behind the Sabres bench); Sabres fans are ALWAYS well represented; and the forum is almost never full, although they usually report it was sold out (a lot of no-shows I guess).

The fans, for the most part, are usually really gracious, although I had a couple of transplanted/turncoat Buffalonians behind me, who were pretty bitter about the way the game progressed.

Many Tampa fans around me, including the turncoats, commented on the Sabres speed, and how they've never seen a team so quick, which was nice.

...

The whining about Sabres fans chanting LGB during the game is ridiculous.

I missed the beginning of the game, so don't know the details of the chants through the ceremonies. IF they went on constantly through the entire thing, then the whining chick has a point. IF they just went on for ~30 seconds at the beginning and when Andy was introduced or when the guy brought up certain highlights of his career, then she's being beyond ridiculous. To most Sabres fans, Andreyslug will always be a Sabre (even though he ended up playing for what seemed like nearly 1/2 the league), so it doesn't surprise me that they wanted him to know they appreciated his time in Buffalo. It's not like people weren't chanting when LaFontaine's # went up in the rafters.

And, not knowing the particulars (and there could be extenuating circumstances that would make me change my mind), the guy who was whining about people standing up in front of him has a legitimate beef. But somehow, I don't equate standing up in front of someone with throwing things at people and starting fights like the stereotypical Phlyers fan would do.

Although whining about opposing teams chanting in one's own building seems to remind me of something that I just can't quite place. <_<
