The Soviet Central Red Army marches into Buffalo looking to avenge their 12-6 loss to the Sabres in 1976. They march out embarrassed and surprised again, this time 6-1. Danny Gare and Ric Seiling each score twice as the Sabres blow the game wide-open in the third period.

PA, I have a slight clarification. The team the Sabres beat on 1/4/76 was the Soviet Wings, not the Red Army Team. The Red Army went 2-1-1 against the NHL teams with the lone tie being 3-3 vs. Montreal in a game that many consider one of the greatest hockey games ever played and Tretiak stood on his head. (The loss was to Philly so we won't mention that.) The Wings went 3-1-0 against NHL teams, so getting DESTROYED by the Sabres was quite an accomplishment.

The Sabres played the next day (1/5/76) in Montreal and received a standing ovation from the Forum crowd. The ovation seemed to inspire the Sabres as they won for only the 3rd time ever in the Forum in a regular season game, 4-2. (Sabres regular season record in Montreal to that point was 3-9-3.) The other two trips to Montreal that season ended in 2-3 losses.

The Sabres had 2 playoff victories at that point in the Forum. 3-2 on 4/10/73 when Rene Robert scored his famous OT goal to keep the Canadiens from sweeping Buffalo on their way to a SC victory. The loss in Buffalo 2 days later was the famous "Thank you Sabres" game.

The other playoff victory had come at the end of the previous season when Danny Gare has scored from the boards along the goal line and the man who would be Christened "Batman" less than 2 weeks later in the infamous "fog game" scored the game winner (4-3) sending Buffalo to its 1st ever trip to the SC Finals.

You da man, Dave. That's an important, and not a slight, clarification.

Great memories. Who can forget Danny Gare's goal in overtime in Game 1, sliding into the boards after scoring?

Wasn't that faceoff deep in the Sabres territory and the Sabres just took it right down the ice and Gare blew it by Dryden?

Exactly. The Sabres broke through center on a three on two break, and Craig Ramsay passed it to Gare, who scored from the right wing, beating Ken Dryden five-hole.

Our "checking" line of Luce, Ramsey, and Gare did it. The faceoff was in the circle to the right of our goalie and we went right down the ice - the entire line 3 on 2.
