LabattBlue Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 If he comes back it probably wouldn't be before March, but I personally think he is done for the year. Not being able to even exercise a little after a 4 month layoff is not encouraging, but then again I'm not a doctor. To think about how the club is going now and to add the Connolly from last years Ottawa series to it, would be fantastic!
sabregoats Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 We'll never see him again... I sure hope you are wrong, but I have a feeling you might be right.
bob_sauve28 Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 We'll never see him again... I agree
slapshot1619 Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 I do know the man personally and he will play hockey again for the Sabres. When?Probably not till after the new year.
SDS Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 I do know the man personally and he will play hockey again for the Sabres. When?Probably not till after the new year. Tell him it isn't worth it....
slapshot1619 Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 Tell him it isn't worth it.... I believe he has 8.9 million reasons to want to return. Money aside, Tell me one NHLer who will walk away from a chance to win the cup... this team can do it and if he has to return with kelso-esque helmet to do so... so be it. This is killing him inside he had to go through it once before and now with the chance at a cup so much closer its eating away at him even more. And to add more fuel to the fire, take Pat Lafontaine... the Sabres wanted him to retire, Pat Refused, forced a trade, and gave it one more go. Unfortuantely Pat got one more bad knock and his body forced him to retire. Tim is not Pat lafontaine. He has never had concussion problems till these past few years, he just needs a solid year under his belt without getting his bell rung. when Tim returns he will be fine, just think how much more potent our PP will be with him back in the lineup.

It isn't worth it.
apuszczalowski Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 he bruised his brain - more than once. It isn't worth it. Exactly, If Steve really does know him personnally, make sure you pass him this message "Although all of us Sabres fans would love to see you back in the Sabres uniform this year and for many years to come, We don't want to see it if it is going to risk your long term health. The chance of Winning the cup is not worth risking your long term health. Think of yourself and your health first, then think about the Sabres and the cup. Take your time and get better, don't rush this. And don't risk long term injury that you will regret later on." Its better to go out before you risk a long term injury then to end your career like Lafontaine, or even worse Brett Lindros.
BetweenThePipes00 Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 Does anyone else think maybe the big contract was kind of a safety net from the Sabres for Connolly just in case he could not come back from the concussion? In essence, he has had his brain scrambled twice now playing for the organization. Not a reward, exactly, but ... do you kind of see where I am going with this? Like, instead of turning their back on him and taking a wait-and-see attitude on the concussion, they supported him and put themselves at risk instead of one of their players. I don't know, I have nothing to base this on, but the organ-eye-zation has become more player-friendly of late it seems. Goodwill gestures like that can only help when trying to get Drury, Briere, etc., to mayeb take a hometown discount.

Goodwill gestures like that can only help when trying to get Drury, Briere, etc., to mayeb take a hometown discount. While I think the Sabres will be able to spin it that way when contract talk time arrives, I don't think that was their reasoning. It's totally speculation on my part, but I think the Sabres got enough assurances from neurosurgeons / brain injury specialists that Timmy's latest concussion was to a different part of his brain than the 1st one and that they believe he has a high probability of returning to play hockey. Considering they gave him the contract before the arbitration awards were in and it was in line with what other RFA's were being signed for by the Sabres, I'd have to believe they expected he'd play this year. After the arbitration season was over, the deal started looking good even if Timmy can't play this year. If that's the case but he comes back next year, then they paid him just under $4.5MM/year for 2 years. Assuming when he comes back, he can start to play the way he was playing in the playoffs, that will still be a bargain. If he comes back this year and plays like he did in the playoffs (after he gets back into game shape), then the contract is a steal for the Sabres. Either way, I don't expect it to shave a whole lot off the pricetag for Briere or Drury. IF it looks like Timmy can't come back, then the Sabres start second-guessing themselves (and the Drs) realizing that Timmy's $2.97MM would go a long way towards paying Drury's $6-7MM.
LabattBlue Posted October 31, 2006 Author Report Posted October 31, 2006 I believe he has 8.9 million reasons to want to return. He gets the money whether he plays again or not. He may have other reasons why he wants to come back, but getting paid isn't one of them.
shrader Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 He gets the money whether he plays again or not. He may have other reasons why he wants to come back, but getting paid isn't one of them. Just some random thoughts here. If he were to retire due to the concussion (while still under contract), the money comes off the cap, but he still gets paid. Since this was a pre-existing condition when he signed the contract, does that change things? I'm pretty sure that nothing changes, but I want to throw this out there just so SDS gets the most out of that consultant fee that he's dishing out to dave. :D
X. Benedict Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 I want to see him play again. I also want to see him keep his head up. Tell him that.
elcrusho Posted October 31, 2006 Report Posted October 31, 2006 I GOT AN IDEA!!!! . . . . . Let's Have Connolly talk to Kelso about maybe a Double Helmet with a Cage on the front...

Maybe they can outfit him with some sort of airbag system. Kind of like the blowfish in Finding Nemo. He gets hit and his entire uniform explodes into one big balloon!
Knightrider Posted November 1, 2006 Report Posted November 1, 2006 I do know the man personally and he will play hockey again for the Sabres. When?Probably not till after the new year. Tell him he's got nothing to prove to me. He was amazing last year.
