inkman Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Despite the fact that my wife and her family are from Boston, but hearing that accent during hockey games is brutal.
hopeleslyobvious Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 After I got past his accent and the fact that he's an idiot during Bruins games, I thought "Brick" did a decent job on OLN last season. So I'm not surprised he's decent this year on Vs.. I haven't watched any Bruins games that didn't feature the Sabres, but my guess is he's still as horrible doing B's games as ever. I have a hard time getting past how he's confused as to why everything is a penalty. Or when he does realize it should be a penalty, he will say something along the lines of, "You know in this 'new NHL' if you cross check a guy in the face, it's a penalty. They have been calling it that way." Disclaimer: Andy Brickley did not say the above quote. It is merely an exaggeration for the purpose of making a mildly humorous statement.
shrader Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Really, what is that? (I really don't know, and his bio doesn't mention anything other than MSG which he's been doing for some time.) And whether OLN/Vs canned him or he left on his own, I don't care. Either way, I don't have to listen to him. He reminds of Howard Cosell at his worst. He's the President (that may not be his exact title, but you get the idea) of the St. Louis Blues.

I never said he wasn't an idiot. ;) I just meant that in comparison to some of the truly painful to listen to regional broadcasts (his Bruins gig being one of them), I don't find myself wanting to reach into the TV and strangle him when he's on Vs..
Doohicksie Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 He's the President (that may not be his exact title, but you get the idea) of the St. Louis Blues. I couldn't find any bio data (his MSG bio, Wikipedia, etc.) that said that. I feel sorry for the Blues; the man knows NOTHING about hockey.

Ogie Oglethorpe Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Brickley and Jack Edwards were absolutely brutal to listen to last year. For some reason Center Ice always uses Boston's coverage when they play Buffalo. The game that Briere was suspened for high-sticking Leetch had to be the worst. They were bitching and moaning about the diving. Edwards was so pissed about it. Briere took a penalty after Boston had numerous against them. Edwards replied with some snide comment and a whining noise directed towards Briere. It totally lacked professionalism. I will agree, Brickley has improved. It's ashame that RJ doesn't want to travel. He would be fantastic in national coverage. Even Lorentz could add some value.
shrader Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 The sad thing about Brickley is that he's by far the best guy in the booth anytime he calls a game with Jack Edwards.

I actually sent an e-mail to NESN after that game about how bad their coverage was.
shrader Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 I actually sent an e-mail to NESN after that game about how bad their coverage was. New Englanders love bitter negativity in their sports coverage. It will never change.
Alaska Darin Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 You mean Andy "Why was that a penalty?" Brickley? In all seriousness, he seems to have toned it down a lot from last year. Nah, he hasn't. On national broadcasts, he keeps his trap shut because the Sabres made him look like a moron over and over again. He was still the same putz we saw last season during the Bruins game. I'd just like to thank OLN for not pulling a DTV and having the Frogcast for this game. Honestly, who outside of Montreal wants to watch a hockey game with the announcers speaking Surrender Monkey?

Honestly, who outside of Montreal wants to watch a hockey game with the announcers speaking Surrender Monkey? Considering how we complain about announcers (I don't think anyone in any city is ever happy with non-local guys, we ALL think they are against our team), not having any idea what the French guys are saying actually doesn't bother me too much. I'm sure it would if it was a Sabres game, but again most guys speaking English annoy the crap out of me.

Honestly, who outside of Montreal wants to watch a hockey game with the announcers speaking Surrender Monkey? That game was in Chicago, so there was no home TV coverage. The only tv coverage that game had was the french crew from Montreal and Center Ice had to air something.

There are some guys that call a great game - Bob Cole, Chuck Kaiton, I am not a big fan of Doc Emerick, but he will do in a pinch. Those Boston guys are retards - they are rejects from Calling WWE matches.

BL37 Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Heh, during the boston game last week we couldn't take it anymore so we hooked up the computer to the surround sound and sinced up the game to the live internet feed from the sabres site. Worked pretty well :D
nfreeman Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 nfree, what do you think his avatar is? It looks like a big yellow penis to me. Perhaps my mind is in the gutter.
Sabre Dance Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Personally, I've been spoiled by living so close to Canada and watching Hockey Night in Canada for years. I know Bob Cole doesn't always get the player's name right anymore and that Don Cherry is amusing/irritating/a jerk (depending on your point of view) but their hockey broadcasts are totally professional, don't constantly explain things to the viewer (it's icing, see, that's where someone shoots the puck....) and their between period features beat all hell out of Clement, Jones, et al. jabbering for ten minutes. (As an aside, I've always hated Bill Clement - as a player and as a broadcaster.) Just about every guy doing play-by-play for US hockey coverage (Emrick, whoever) makes the most exciting action sound like bird-watching. RJ is the MAN when it comes to exciting play-by-play. Thank God we can always get him on the radio or internet......
Alaska Darin Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 He definately wasn't as bad during the first game on NESN this year as he was last year. The painful reality that the Sabres are actually a really, really good team and the Bruins aren't probably helped. He still spent plenty of time stepping on his dick. I especially loved the whining about the slashing penalty when one of the Bruins two-handed Vanek's stick out of his hand. Apparently to Brick, a two-hander isn't a penalty if it doesn't break the stick. You know, because guys could just drop their stick everytime someone took a two-hander. As if slashing should be valid when it doesn't break a stick or arm. Good play, goon! <_<

As previously stated, its because there was no other tv feed
Orange Seats Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 It looks like a big yellow penis to me. Perhaps my mind is in the gutter. It's a banana slug. You know, the kind of slug that we've been comparing the new humping ferret bandit logo to since July when the logo leaked. Thats what they really look like, red eye and everything.

OK, got it. pretty gross. still a questionable choice for an avatar (and still looks like a yellow penis, IMHO). but to each his own. back to our regularly scheduled program: I thought Brickley was OK, not terrible, and same with the play-by-play guy. I like Emrick much better (and for that matter I liked John Davidson much better than Brickley). Still, any of the canadian productions (esp. TSN) blow away vs. Jack Edwards is/was atrocious.
