It obviously has some sort of effect on opposing teams. Players look at that thing and it's so abstract that what you end up seeing reveals something (probably negative) about your character.

 

If you're too self-absorbed and concerned with your looks, you see a toupee.

 

If you're slow, you see the slug.

 

If you're immature, you see a Pokemon.

 

If you pick your nose, you see a booger.

 

If you wet the bed, you see a giant urine stain.

 

And if you're in denial, you see a great logo.
