The Sabres acquire four-time Stanley Cup champion Clark Gillies and his big salary from the New York Islanders in the waiver draft. His time in Buffalo is a minor disappointment ? just 34 points in two seasons, but he did rack up a fair number of penalty minutes. Also on this date, the team's original trainer, Frank Christie, dies at the age of 63 after a long illness.

Not a Sabres memory, but that Islanders line of Gilles, Trottier, and Mike Bossy was pretty friggin' great...
