Pullup Champ Posted July 26, 2006 Report Posted July 26, 2006 Cunneyworth staying to coach Amerks Assistant coach Houda will leave to work for NHL's Bruins Kevin Oklobzija Staff writer (July 26, 2006) ? By opting not to promote Randy Cunneyworth, the Buffalo Sabres essentially pushed Doug Houda to the National Hockey League. Instead of replacing Scott Arniel on Lindy Ruff's coaching staff in Buffalo, Cunneyworth will return for a seventh season as head coach of the Rochester Americans. That's because Sabres coach Lindy Ruff is set to hire James Patrick as Arniel's replacement. ...Nice move!
IKnowPhysics Posted July 26, 2006 Report Posted July 26, 2006 I like that the hire was essentially from within the organization. It keeps the family feel. That, and he was always goofy on TV. But I wonder if James is ready to take Scott's place in coaching the offense and powerplay, or if the assistant coaches will shuffle their duties a little bit.
slapshot1619 Posted July 26, 2006 Report Posted July 26, 2006 Patrick was a good offensive defenseman in his heyday... James Patrick Profile from NHL.com I think our PP will be fine
Eleven Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 Excellent move. Patrick was essentially an on-ice coach his last couple of years; he played a big role in molding guys like McKee and Kalinin. It's a great move for him and for the club.
Stoner Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 Another side of the story: why do we always want to hire the former Sabre? Why keep things in the family? is easy, they say.
shrader Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 Another side of the story: why do we always want to hire the former Sabre? Why keep things in the family? is easy, they say. Familiarity with the players and the system. It seems like they're actually hiring people who know the game and are capable of filling their role. It's not like they're taking the Gregg Williams method of hiring friends.
