bob_sauve28 Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 I think that is an outragous amount for a guy with offensive talents and who is injured a lot
BuffalOhio Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 I think it's too much. In the Sabres' salary structure, you can't pay Jay McKee $4 Million. What then, would you have to pay Tallinder and Lydman? Problem is, now that McKee's gotten $4 Million, it's going to affect the Sabres in negotiations with their own RFA's.
Ogie Oglethorpe Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 This free agency period is just like last summer. Regier will stick to the plan. I'm still in shock that the Leafs paid $17M for 4 defensemen... there will be a lot of players available for trade as payrolls get out of control... and the Sabres have a lot of talent up front and a solid goalie waiting to be dealt. Look for more out of trades then wasting free agent money
apuszczalowski Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 I would have been willing to go as high as 3 to make sure he stays a Sabre But, even being one of the biggest supporters on this board (along with PA) of resigning McKee, $4 million was way to much to pay for him.

Stoner Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 People can say it's an outrageous amount and he's not worth it. But St. Louis disagrees, and that's all that matters.

We were all big supporters of re signing McKee, I think some of us just realized his price tag would be too high...which it was.
X. Benedict Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 People can say it's an outrageous amount and he's not worth it. But St. Louis disagrees, and that's all that matters. From the perspective of Buffalo, I think they were correct not to match that offer.
apuszczalowski Posted July 3, 2006 Report Posted July 3, 2006 We were all big supporters of re signing McKee, I think some of us just realized his price tag would be too high...which it was. Although he made mention that Buffalo's deal they offered was good salary wise only he wanted an extra year that Buffalo was not willing to give, Meaning (from the rumors that were coming out when he made the comments) the deal was for just above 2 million (2-2.5 is a good guess) for around 3 years. So Buffalo could have had him cheaper by just giving him an extra year. There was no doubt Buffalo would not match a 4 million dollar a year offer, and that would be too much for him on a shoestring budget team. I doubt even mcKee thought he would get an offer that high on the first day of FA. Weither it was outrageous or not, signing him just helped out St. louis and brought them a team leader.

I think that's wishful thinking. There is no way he would've taken, say, $9 million for 4 years from us vs. the $16 million he got from STL.
apuszczalowski Posted July 3, 2006 Report Posted July 3, 2006 I think that's wishful thinking. There is no way he would've taken, say, $9 million for 4 years from us vs. the $16 million he got from STL. I agree had he known St Louis was going to offer him 4 mil for 4 years when Buffalo made there offer. He made mention that the financial terms of the deal were acceptable, it was only the length of time of the deal that they were disagring on. Sabres wanted 3 years, McKee wanted 4. Therefore if Regier said Ok, we can work with 4 years at that price, its a deal, McKee would have resigned and there would have been no huge offer from St. Louis. Now I know what some of you are going to say "Why would he sign that deal before getting to test FA?" Maybe because he truley did wan to stay a Sabre and was not expecting much more then 3 million a year in a long term deal so instead of uprouting his family (and Buffalo native wife) he would take the little bit less to stay where he is and keep this team together.
Larry Playfair Posted July 3, 2006 Report Posted July 3, 2006 The Canes landed Commodore for 2.5 per year for 2 years - this is more in line with what i thought should happen for Mckee, maybe a 3rd year to make him happy.

That is a huge contract for Commodore - his agent did very well for him. I don't think that much of him as a defenseman. I was usually happy to see him on the ice. Although he is a big physical presence - he is prone to mistakes and probably Carolina's slowest skater. edit: I think you got this wrong Larry - it is 2.5 mil for two years, not per year. This is probably right in line with what he is worth. about 1.25 mil a year.
bob_sauve28 Posted July 3, 2006 Author Report Posted July 3, 2006 Signing Jay McKee: I don?t mind his addition, because he ought to be a top four defenseman here. This team imploded on the blue line last season, due to the Al MacInnis retirement, the Chris Pronger trade and significant injuries to the key surviving defensemen. McKee solidifies things. But is he worth $16 million over four years? Even McKee was stunned by the magnitude of the Blues? offer. McKee isn?t an all-star. He has little offensive ability and was plagued by injuries before the lockout allowed him to heal up. He IS sound defensively, but $16 million seems like a rich investment at a position already featuring Barrett Jackman, Eric Brewer, Christian Backman, Dennis Wideman, Bryce Salvador, Matt Walker and No. 1 overall pick Erik Johnson. Backman, Jackman and Brewer will all look at the $16 million as their earnings yardsticks for signing new multi-year deals here. So this signing will have interesting long-range implications for the franchise. NHL agents scratched their heads at the money Pleau gave Salvador last summer. I?m guessing this signing will be viewed similarly. http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/co...86?OpenDocument
