Two or less Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 We're now 12 games into the season and Vanek has no goals. This is the same guy who was sopposed to be the scoring leader and the guy who replaces Satan THIS SEASON. Is he ready for the NHL or should he be send down to Rochester? Remember, Jason Spezza played awsome in AHL, then when he got to the NHL he stuggled, and after playing in the AHL again last year due to the lockout, he has said it was the best thing for his career. Now that Vanek has some NHL expierence, maybe he needs to go down to Rochester and work on the weaknesses and develop his game a little more? Thoughts?
DrunkenSabre Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 he just needs time, thats all. i dont think sending him down would do any good to be honest. Considering our hard ship with Miller down we're gonna need all the scoring we can get.
Saber61 Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 yea we have room for Roy and Pominville now i think with grier out and pyatt about to completly collapse and be sent out.

DrunkenSabre Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 Getting over the flu might help as well. Vanek has flu? news to me. that would help alot. i can barely move when i have flu. then again i do only get it about once a year, if that.

On the broadcast last night they mentioned that Ruff stated that Vanek had been playing with the flu lately and that he was on antibiotics to try and speed up his recovery.

Larry Playfair Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 8 pts isnt that bad, he is contributing.
hopeleslyobvious Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 8 pts isnt that bad, he is contributing. Agreed. However, if he has the flu, maybe they should let him sit out for a game or two to recover. The rest will probably speed up his recovery. Of course I'm not a Dr. so I am probably just making half of this up.

OK, now that some guys are likely going to go on the IR list, you have some room to have a player come in and take his place while he gets over the flu. Up to this point, who would you have played in his place on the 1st line based on the 23 man roster: Mika, an injured Lydman, or Peters / an injured Pyatt?
Guest Guest_Rabbit151 Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 I watched the game on TSN last night. As I watched Vanek lumber to the puck in an attempt for a breakaway, I noticed Chris ( I skate better in mud ) Phillips catch him. Pierre Maguire re-affirmed my thoughts by pointing out that that was a disturbing image if you are a Sabres fan hoping this Vanek kid is going to be a superstar. I have to admit I had my doubts when the Sabres drafted him. Gifted around the net, yes, but he had no speed in college and he hasn't gotten any faster. Who knows, with the right supporting cast, he may emerge as a Tim Kerr style PP, slot-specialist, but with the current emphasis on speed, I don't know if he can cut it at the NHL level. I've noticed him trying some tricky plays, dipsy-doodle dekes and behind the back passes, interesting, but usually don't work. He's like an above average magician in a league of David Copperfields. He better focus on doing what he does best, what he was drafted for....shooting the puck. Just keep shooting and we'll see what happens.
Hawerchuk Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 I say STAY. Just needs to get off the goal-less slump and the Red Light will go on!!

OK, 1st off, apparently the kid is playing with the flu, that MIGHT have slowed him down a bit. The games I've been at, he has shown good speed. 2nd off, he is tied w/ Zeppo for the team lead with 8 assists and he leads the team in shots w/ 40. He scored over 40 goals in the AHL last year, so I do expect to see him score a few and sooner rather than later. How much more focus should he put on shooting the puck? He will be a very good offensive forward.
Swedesessed Posted November 4, 2005 Report Posted November 4, 2005 Vanek has to stay. Its not like Vanek isnt getting his chances. In due time, the opportunites he has been getting will go into the net.

LabattBlue Posted November 4, 2005 Report Posted November 4, 2005 Vanek is going nowhere. Despite not scoring a goal yet, he has probably been one of the top 5 forwards over the first 11 games. Assuming Lindy doesn't jerk him around i.e playing him with Mair and Gaustad, he will be fine. I still believe 25 goals is reachable for his rookie year.
Saber61 Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 see when i have the flu i stay in bed and get rest not physically exert myself in everyway possible playing hockey in a cold atmosphere... ruff should be shot in the parking lot for allowing vanek to play with ANY type of flu symptoms at ALL... not only does he risk infecting the rest of the team he's more of a boat anchor out there then he is helping... what a disgrace this coaching staff is...
Guest Guest_Rabbit151 Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 Shot in the parking lot? Isn't that a bit harsh? Perhaps a simple golden shower is in order.
