LabattBlue Posted June 27, 2006 Report Posted June 27, 2006 Interesting. According to TSN, the AHL is considering manadatory visors for all players. Link It's a good rule and if it prevents even one serious injury in the future, it will be worth it.
shrader Posted June 27, 2006 Report Posted June 27, 2006 The sooner this rule passes the better. Hopefully they follow suit in the NHL in a year or two.
Taro T Posted June 27, 2006 Author Report Posted June 27, 2006 The sooner this rule passes the better. Hopefully they follow suit in the NHL in a year or two. The article stated that if the AHL adopts the rule, then the NHLPA will decide whether it wants grandfather in visors. If it agrees, the NHL will require them in the same way it required helmets starting in '79. I'd really like to see them require full face protection as it will prevent LaFontaine style broken jaws and guys getting the odd stick caught under their visor (the results of that usually aren't pretty). The chin pad (along with a mouth guard) will also help reduce concussions. We know players won't wear them unless they are forced to, so force them to wear them.
shrader Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 The chin pad on a full face shield seems pretty useless with the way kids are wearing their cages now. Most of the college kids I watch have the mask dangling so loose. The chin pad is a good 2 inches away from their face. I don't think you'll ever see full face shields in the NHL. The league sees marketability in being able to see the player's faces. I also wonder if a full shield offers significantly more protection than a visor.
frisky Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 It went through today. They voted and passed the mandatory visor policy. I think they'll get used to it and it will protect the eyes.
