Stoner Posted May 27, 2006 Report Posted May 27, 2006 May 27, 1975 At the Aud, the Stanley Cup finals end in disappointing -- but predictable -- fashion: the Sabres cannot beat Bernie Parent. The Flyers shut out the Sabres 2-0 and win their second Stanley Cup in a row. The game is scoreless through two periods, but 11 seconds into the third, Bob Kelley whirls out in front of the net and tucks the puck inside the far post past Roger Crozier to make it 1-0. Then with a little less than three minutes left, Bill Clement -- yes, THAT Bill Clement -- scores on a breakaway to put the thing away. The fans in the Aud stay classy, chanting "Thank you Sabres" in the final minute and cheering the announcement of Parent's Conn Smythe Trophy win with shouts of "Bernie! Bernie!" (Ted Darling excitedly announces that with the trophy, Parent will receive fifteen hundred dollars!) The fans also shine in the sign department. One read: "Philly has Kate Smith, but we have an old bat too." "I was very disappointed that they won the Cup in our building," Jim Lorentz said. "That sort of hurt. It didn't sit too well with me to see the Cup being presented in Memorial Auditorium to another team." May 27, 1999 At Marine Midland Arena, the Sabres beat the Leafs 4-2 to take a two games to one advantage in the Eastern Conference finals. Dominik Hasek and Miroslav Satan return from injuries, but perhaps the biggest comeback belongs to captain Mike Peca, who was criticized for his play in the first two games in Toronto. In Game 3, Peca throws his body around, assists on Joey Juneau's shorthanded goal and draws a penalty on Mats Sundin, leading to Stu Barnes' game-winning power play goal (the thirteenth straight playoff game the Sabres score a power play goal, the second longest streak in league history). Satan, who missed 32 days with a right ankle injury, ties the game early in the second period and assists on Curtis Brown's clinching empty netter. Hasek, wearing scuba-style underpants with a special patch to keep his groin warm -- YUCK -- makes 24 saves, half of them in the third period. The highlight of the period, though, is Peca stepping out of the penalty box and drilling Tie Domi a new one. And the fans go beserk.
