Stoner Posted May 23, 2006 Report Posted May 23, 2006 May 23, 1998 Dominik Hasek has to make only 19 saves as the Sabres shut out the Capitals in Washington, 2-0, in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals. Michal Grosek continues his terrific playoff season with the winning goal, scored just 31 seconds into the middle stanza on his own rebound off the lively back boards. Miroslav Satan gets the other goal. May 23, 1999 Dwayne Roloson is the surprise starter in goal for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Dominik Hasek's groin is acting up again. Lindy Ruff knew the day before Hasek would not play but kept the news a secret, hoping to stun the Leafs just before game time and give them a false sense of security. It seems to work, as Vaclav Varada scores early to give the Sabres a 1-0 lead. But Mats Sundin tallies just nine seconds later. It's a back and forth game -- Stu Barnes scores his first goal as a Sabre to tie the game at 3 in the second period. In the third, the Sabres get goals from Curtis Brown and Geoff Sanderson, whose marker is one of the most spectacular in Sabres playoff history. The Sabres hold on to win 5-4, and Dwayne Roloson's solid play (28 saves) is the story of the game. That, and five goals allowed at the other end by Curtis Joseph, five goals, by the way, from five different Sabres.
