TM8-PL16 Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 this is nuts... why can't you just go to the game, cheer like crazy for your team and NOT be a drunken idiot?? how can someone complain about ticket prices and then pay $8 for a beer?? that baffles me. I don't drink at games for several reasons, but mainly because I enjoy watching hockey and want to remember watching my team. I've been to several away games for the Sabres and I'm always respectful and I always CHEER my head off... sure there is always at least one guy who says things like "go back to your own city" with some choice swear words thrown in, but most of the time after seeing that I'm a respectful and nice person, the fans of the home team I'm sitting near say "sorry about him being an a$$hole, we're not all like him". I'm not for disrespecting people, fighting, breaking things or getting stupid drunk at a hockey game. It comes down to, how do you want to be treated and then treat others the same way. I for one love to see young ones at hockey games, we need all the fans we can get, get a five year old interested and the game will grow. Drunken idiots being elitest fans will do nothing but bring the game down. so I fully expect to hear the "Let's Go Buff-A-Lo" at tonights game, I just hope I don't hear these drunken moron storys after. Once again, you represent all Sabre fans across the country and I don't want to be lumped into a category with the drunken PolishSabre that posted above. (except for his NASCAR comment, but that is another thread. NASCAR = People that shave car numbers into their BACK HAIR ???? that's just sad....)
bills_fan_in_raleigh Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 From what i heard it was like a duzen Sabre fans who did a LET'S GO BUFFALO right at the start of the anthem. But one thing we don't hear, is how the Canes chant RED at the end of the anthem. Instead of land of the free and the home of the brave! they all do land of the free and the home of the RED! So what's worse? having a few drunk fans yell out Let's go Buffalo are most of the arena changing the words of the anthen to sound good for them? i was at game and didnt hear the lets go bfl at start but canes fans do insert red and the usual idiots hoot and hoollar at other parts of anthem. This happens at every game canes or whatever I have been at for last many years.
Dr. K Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 I was a Sabres fan at the game Saturday. I sat in the 300 section; there were a lot of Sabres fans up there, but I was between groups of Canes fans with whom I chatted on friendly terms. Yes, the Sabres fans were loud and cheered when things went well for the Sabres, but I heard no booing, and saw no rowdiness. I heard some taunting down by the concesions and the men's room, but nothing out of hand. I didn't hear anyone disrespecting the national anthem, and I think people who make that charge are just trying to find some reason to get mad. I left right after the game and if there was bad stuff going on outside the arena after the game, I did not encounter it. I don't doubt there were some drunken a**holes acting up, but that was not what I saw. I don't see any reason for Sabres fans, or Canes fans, to act like jerks. I do think that people who go to sports events to get drunk and act abusive are losers. It's about the game, not about proving your manhood by getting in someone's face. I was born and raised in Buffalo, always will be a Bills and Sabres fan, but I have lived in Raleigh for 24 years. A LOT of the Sabres fans there were not from Buffalo, but good NC citizens and residents of the Triangle.

A LOT of the Sabres fans there were not from Buffalo, but good NC citizens and residents of the Triangle. I sat in Section 202. During a pause in the Anthem, I heard a Sabres fan yell something stupid (I can't remember what it was), and I was embarrassed at that point. I was also embarrassed by the stupidity of how drunk a lot of us got. Really folks, it's not about getting totally plowed - it's about cheering for your team. Have a few beers and get giddy over how well our team is doing.
cgang Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 That's not how it goes.. everyone yells RED really loud when the anthem gets to "and the rockets RED glare.. " I came here hearing how great the Buffalo fans are (were), and after game 1 I have lost all respect for your fans. It was utterly rediculous the way your fans acted. Believe me, none of what you have heard is B.S.! After the way things went saturday afternoon, expecially at the end of the game, I advise all Buffalo fans to be aware of they're surroundings monday night because you will not come into our house and disrespect us that way again. Why don't you come find me in section 310 tonight big boy! Just come up there and yell your ready to knock someone out and I'll come to you. Nice. All of you are simply pathetic. I'm not a holy roller or anything, but this entire discourse is so simple minded and foolish it's almost embarassing. Buh bye.
RayFinkle Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 I don't think I have ever seen so many internet tough guys gathered in one thread at one time.
Stoner Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 I get this sinking feeling Schopp & The Bulldog will devote hours to this topic this afternoon. Anything but the game!
X. Benedict Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 There has been a lot of discussion on Canes discussion boards that Sabres fans at game one were out of line, disrespectful and abusive. Now while I dont condone the generlizations and verbal abuse of Sabres fans and the city of Buffalo, I feel ashamed and embarrassed of the behavior I have heard Sabres fans partaking in (disrepecting the national enthem, smashing glass giveaways, extreme drunkeness and abuse). Its utterly rediculous to travel all that way to cheer on our hometown team and embarass everyone at home. Remember, when you go to away games, you are not only representing yourself, but every person who shares your allegiance (Sabres fans and the people of Buffalo). Go and cheer on our boys but please be respectful and dont give everyone else a bad name!!!! GO SABRES! With all due respect. I was there, and the Buffalo fans brought a playoff hockey atmosphere. I did have one Buffalo fan tell me he was punched in the face - his crime - chanting "Let's go Buffalo" while waiting in line to take a leak. Outcheering the home team is why we bought tickets and drove 12 hours. There was plenty of drinking and a festival atmosphere, but what do you expect, there were tons of people seeing folks they knew that they hadn't seen in 10 years. I talked to plenty of Carolina fans and they were discouraged, but more than anything I think they were discouraged by the comparative levels of passion. For anyone there it was special - and in my opinion untarnished by any boorish behavior. We brought the old Adams division down South, they brought all the passion of the SE division.
Done Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 I think the problem here is the "All you can eat" buffet mentality. A bunch of dedicated Sabre fans take an expensive last minute trip 12 hours away, and want to get the most bang for their buck. There's no problem downing some beer and cheering your head off, but we are playing Carolina.....not Boston or Philly. I can see needing to act like a hardhead if you were in those cities, but if you just let the Canes fans sip their wine coolers and buy pennants and a program for their 4 year olds.....it will all be fine. Having animosity towards a Cane fan is like rooting for Bambi's mother to get shot.
Campy Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 I don't think I have ever seen so many internet tough guys gathered in one thread at one time. Aye. I haven't been online much of late, but it seems that there's a serious "StadiumWall-ization" going on 'round these here parts... :(
SHAAAUGHT!!! Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 It's not like I wanted to say "I told you so," but after wasting my time reading through this thread I am thinking this is reason #143 the south sucks. Even Philly fans didn't b!tch this much.
shrader Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 Does anyone else see the irony in Cardiac Canes coming here and complaining about Buffalo fans looking for trouble in Carolina's arena?
BetweenThePipes00 Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 The only time I ever really wanted to take a swing at a drunk visiting fan was in 1990 or 91 when the Canadiens were in town for the playofs ... I was standing in line for the bathroom at the Aud (of course the line was out into the hallway) and a guy was in front of me with his kid, probably around 5 ... like TM8-PL16 said, I love to see little kids at games, it's how they become fans. anyway, the kid had a Jim Kelly jersey on and some drunk Habs fans come RUNNING up to him, crouches down and yells in his face "JIM KELLY SUCKS!!!!!" You can imagine the reaction in the tight Aud hallway ... if a cop had not been close by he may not have survived. Anyway, it sucks to hear that a few drunken idiots are making a bad name for Buffalo fans, but there are drunken idiots everywhere ... if Carolina fans want to think all of Buffalo is like that, nothing we say will convince them otherwise. and by the way, that thing TM8-PL16 said about NASCAR fans and back hair? Sadly, 100% TRUE. A friend of mine went to a race and some dude had Earnhardt's #3 shaved into his back. Again, doesn't mean ALL NASCAR fans do it ... but isn't one enough in this case?! ;)

People want to say its no place for a kid, but why don't you ask those players who their favorite people to play for are? I'm certainly not asking for a game to be akin to church, but violence, shoving all that stuff have no place off the ice. My best memories are of being a kid, walking up those ramps at the Aud thinking my legs would break - and they are our Sabres fans of the future. Anyway, it sucks to hear that a few drunken idiots are making a bad name for Buffalo fans, but there are drunken idiots everywhere ... if Carolina fans want to think all of Buffalo is like that, nothing we say will convince them otherwise. Well, the Carolina fans I posted with all year - many have changed their mind about Buffalo when I reminded them all of Buffalo isn't like that, just like everyone in NC is not obsessed with NASCAR. I'm just saying that Buffalo has enough of a hard time with our reputation, and as Buffalonians who live away from WNY now it's a constant thing to explain to people, bring them to Buffalo and show them that we go beyond the stereotypes. And when a few fans go down there and make a spectacle of themselves it just sets us back. and by the way, that thing TM8-PL16 said about NASCAR fans and back hair? Sadly, 100% TRUE. A friend of mine went to a race and some dude had Earnhardt's #3 shaved into his back. Again, doesn't mean ALL NASCAR fans do it ... but isn't one enough in this case?! ;) Yeah, but if he lived up in WNY - he'd have shaved the Bills logo into his back and spray painted it red and blue and we would have thought that was hilarious...disgusting, but hilarious. I know a few people that would have bought the guy a beer while refraining from slapping him on the back of course. :D I think that little display is about the dude's personality, and not the sport he's watching at the moment.

Just come up there and yell your ready to knock someone out and I'll come to you. Plus, Raleigh is a little different. They marketed the game more to young families in Raleigh, so you'll see probably twice as many kids at the games there as in Buffalo. Just different demographics. First off, welcome to our board. CanesChic, that thread on your board about your brother is hilarious. Personally, I think this is the reason that Canes fans are so upset. You've got a large population of ex-Buffalonians who may want to cheer for their childhood team instead of the one they've been supporting all year. As someone who lives in Boston, I would never pull for the Bruins or Patriots (unless they're playing the Leafs or Dolphins of course). I am from WNY, who for economic reasons is unable to live there. The Canes are in a different division, so maybe it's easier to swap teams. I was not at the game Saturday, but I seriously doubt it was only Sabres fans that were in the wrong. All it takes is a few people to ruin it for many. It is a shame RBC security wasn't better prepared. We've had two series so far with nearly opposite types of fans. Ottawa fans are some of the classiest I've seen. Philly fans, well, they're pretty good with the f-word. Hopefully you guys are closer to the Otters. Regardless, at least on this board, we'd much rather talk hockey that about the fans.

twolinepass Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 Why would any Sabre fan disrespect the U.S. anthem -- or the Canadian anthem if they play it there, which doesn't seem likely? I think that story is total horsecock. Sorry. I was there and yes that is a total lie. I think Canes fans are grasping at straws. They outnumbers Sabres fans 4 to 1 and were still drown out by our cheers. Sad.
twolinepass Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 I am amazed at the overreaction the Canicas are having. Did we watch the same game? I was in section 314 and saw no ill behavior. I partied in Sabres Alley, where we jeered every Canes fan that walked by. Most of them were very good natured about it. No swearing or violent behavior. I still have no voice and its Monday afternoon.

OhioSabreFan Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 Why would you bring a 4 year old to a game? Better yet, why is anyone from Buffalo a Carolina fan? Now you might say, what is an Ohioan doing being a Sabres fan.. There was no hockey in Columbus growing up... When I was six, I took in my first NHL game and I had to pick one of the two teams playing to root for.. What a great decision I made.. a lot of responsibility for a six year old and I aced the exam.
VASabreFan Posted May 22, 2006 Report Posted May 22, 2006 I am amazed at the overreaction the Canicas are having. Did we watch the same game? I was in section 314 and saw no ill behavior. I still have no voice and its Monday afternoon. First off, great site! I just found this site and registered today and thought I would add my two cents. Much like you, twoline, I was there and didn't witness too much ill will. In fact, we were all commenting on how things were good natured, for the most part. I think it all comes down to attitude though. My friends and I were there for the sabres, we drank, had a blast. We came into the building, still had a lot of fun, met a lot of nice people ( Sabres and Canes fans). When I go and cheer my team on the road, I like to have fun, cheer my team and have good banter with the home fans. There is a line there and if it's not crossed and can poke fun at yourself once and a while, you should have an enjoyable experience. It would be easy for me to go back and focus on the few Canes fans I did see who were rude and obnoxious and then label the entire fanbase. Like when I was in line for the bathroom out in the lot, along with some other sabres fans, a group of Canes fans come by and say "Look at the line of Sabres fans for the John. they obviouldy like the smell...smells like Buffalo." Or there was the Canes fan that knocked over a sabres fan beer after the 2nd goal...just to be a jerk. See, every team has bad-apple fans, so those Canes fans who are throwing stones should know that you are not exempt from that either. Again though, for the record, we had a great time and most of the canes fans we met and and ineracted with were awesome. the Sabres fans we met were better though! GO SABRES!!!

The words are not changed at all. It's in keeping with the song and the team. It's also been a tradition since the team arrived in Raleigh. The Goat
