This team so desperately needs to get into the playoffs so that we learn which guys can step up and which ones can't (there are always surprises both ways). Maybe Samuelsson snaps and the light bulb goes on and realizes it's fun to scrum.... maybe Benson disappears once he starts getting really run. (I don't think Benson ever fades, though.)

But it's important for them to get there so that they understand the intensity and ferocity and get comfortable with it. That way, when Tampa and Florida rachet up their play for one period in December after falling behind 2-0 on a flukey goal, you raise your game too and keep them down 2-0, rather than folding and losing 5-3.

And no Olympics, Worlds, or regular season game will prepare them for it. And any intense games they had in the AHL, or CHL, or overseas pales in comparison, or was years ago in their lives.

4 Nations had ultimate intensity, especially Canada USA but otherwise yes, international rarely has the same physicality.

I think the best you can hope for with the way this is being built is if by some chance they got in (a season where everything went right and they got lucky) you'd see a quick Leaf style exit and they'd have to try to fix the line up for the playoffs for years the way the Leafs have. The roster is just not being built for playoff hockey.

And the 4 Nations did have more intensity than all those other tournaments. But the Sabres who participated? Dahlin, yes; Luukkonen, who never got in a game; and Jokiharju (who was good in it, good when he returned, and somehow managed a positive plus/minus while playing on Boston's top D-pairing despite their team being crushed down the stretch. And Thompson got to... sit in a suite? Visit the team for one practice?

The Leafs have finally built a playoff-capable D-corps; we'll see how it works for them this time.

Defense wins championships. Adams has Dahlin and... some guys in various levels of okay to bad.

I can’t wait to see Ottawa vs Toronto. I want it to be a 7 game series where both teams destroy each other

If Ottawa wins I hope the Leafs blow it up. It’s a big notch above Buffalo in the sense that they get near the top of the regular season standings every year but can’t advance. Talk about running it back!

I am somewhat interested to see if Marner stops disappearing in the playoffs, due to his UFA status.

ESPN announcer made it sound like Ottawa missing the playoffs seven straight years before today was remarkable.

The Senators are pikers.

I know the Sabres probably can't trade for Brady Tkachuk...

But can we draft one of his unborn sons?

He'll probably help us break the playoff drought by then.

The dude is a freaking hockey player!

Officials giving Toronto every break possible.  They just ruined what was looking like a good game.

I'm reminded why swayman was the #1 goalie for the Bruins the last couple of playoff runs.

4 goals against on 10 shots 🤮

who does he think he is UPL?

Did a perfect Lehner impression on Mariner’s breakaway.

Rumoured to be wanting out of boston for months now.  Doubt they trade him to us, but a 1st and UPL might make it happen though.

Being in the DC area i’m totally envious of the Caps situation.  Year after year they are in the playoffs and the local fans/media are totally into it.  It never gets old for these folks.

So far the first round is a dud compared to the past few years.

It’s still the best round of the playoffs. Especially on nights where you have two games at once
