Ruff and Adams end-of-season press conference: Saturday, April 19, 4:30pm

My prediction:  This year's narrative will be that the players were not in shape, that many of them were not mature enough to have good off-seasons when it came to training, and it will be up to the players to take things more seriously in order for the team to get to the next level.

Maybe I am reading to much into this... but 36 hours after the season ends... PC scheduled with Adams and Ruff... seems to me like there will be no major changes in the organizational FO/Coaching.... this would be discouraging.

Looking back at some dates, in 2017 the season ended April 9th. Murray had an end of season presser. Then he and Bylsma were fired on April 20th. I guess there is faint hope that evaluations can still happen.

There has to be somebody in Pegula’s sphere who will tell him the situation is a disaster. Guelli?  One of his kids? Bettman?  Or is there no one who dares tell him what he doesn’t want to hear?

So I guess that’s it, eh? This confirms Adams is back?

I’m almost in shock. Ill enjoy my last few days

I’ll hold out hope then

I’m just whistling through the graveyard.

It’s a good point tho. I think indications always seemed to be KA would be back so it was always going to take a big change of heart, which could happen in the immediacy after the press conference I guess, like Murray

then again, it’s probably more common that the GM being trotted out means he’s back, and maybe someone will ask directly or he’ll say

You know what pisses me off, none of our media have the balls to ask flat out why kevyn adams thinks he deserves to be back with how awful the team has been under his 5yr rule.

I'll be surprised if Harrington doesn't take this angle.

That’s what I was thinking. It should be a very, very heated conference, or why do it? If ANY management deserved tough questions it’s this one

in fact it’s a farce if someone doesn’t ask “by what metric can you possibly keep your job?”

Harrington to his credit has written multiple times he believes KA should be fired. Fired. Not “well depending on the owner”.

As much as I hate Mike Harrington, I feel like he is the one guy that may have the guts to ask those tough questions.

This franchise is at a dangerous tipping point not only because of the 14 years no playoffs, but overall survival IMO.

No time to dance around these questions.

Adams as GM:

•missed playoffs 5 straight years to begin tenure

•36% of the 14 year drought committed on his watch

•78 point average per 82 game season

•3/5 seasons of finishes in the 70s or worse

•two consecutive seasons of downward progress

91➡️84

84➡️~77-79

•Author of the 3 longest non-tank-year losing streaks in franchise history

All we need is a new buzzword.  Accountability didn’t do the job so gotta “think outside the box” for a new one.

But was Pegula there to give them a rousing speech?

So when are they going to announce Ruff moving upstairs and Appert taking over as HC?  Next year?

Yup. That's already scheduled for April 2026. We did a thorough interviewing process, but we really like Appert and he provides consistency for our young players.

I hope Adams is going to explain how he plans to sign players when most of the money is spent on buying knee pads

suck my dick GIF

I hope he explains how his previous statements that he is the one determining how much money is spent each season, and that if this was a "playoffs or bust" year, why he didn't take on any salary throughout the season in the short term, either to end the losing streak, or to you know... save his own job seeing as how it was playoffs or bust.

Orrr --- how at the deadline he could've been the accomplice to take on cap hits to acquire additional draft collateral to package and help move up into the top 4, or whatever.

With all these resources available and you in full control and playoffs or bust -- why do you take no action? Why was Reimer waived? Why does Power still not have a veteran partner? The softball questions.

I've never bought into the desire of some fans to turn reporters into a conduit for their anger. I just hope they do their jobs.

The replies I'd like to hear, assuming Adams is back

  • "Six months ago, you said this was a playoff team. Where did you go wrong in terms of that evaluation?"

It's complicated, but a major part of it is I put too much faith in young players taking a step they weren't ready for and I underestimated the learning curve we were facing on defence and special teams with our new system

  • "We heard talk from Lindy about changing culture. What specifically does that mean? How is the culture flawed and what do you need to see it become?

We need players to stick with the boring details and consistent puck management needed to win hockey games. Don't default to globetrotters hockey when we're winning and hero ball when we're losing. We improved on our willingness to get dirty in terms of going to the paint and having each other's backs, but we still have a ways to go. Players who aren't on board with that won't be here.

  • "A number of players had disappointing seasons, should we expect more core pieces to follow Dylan Cozens out the door as a result, or will most of them be back?

I wouldn't expect them all to be back. We need to make changes

  • "Do you expect Jiri Kulich and Zach Benson to spend significant time in your top 6 next year?

Only if they earn it. That won't be the default plan.

  • "You've been talking about adding a defensively reliable top 4 defenceman for some time now, should fans expect one to be added this summer?"

Yes

  • "Special teams failures arguably cost the team a playoff spot this season, who is accountable for that and how will it be fixed?"

We've identified areas that need to be upgraded in terms of systems and personnel. We've already made changes and we will make more

  • "Your goaltenders put up some of the worst statistics in the league this year, do you intend to add a veteran NHL goalie to the roster?"

It's certainly something we're going to look at.

  • "Are you planning to spend at or near the cap next season?"

Yes

  • 'How do you plan to bring fans back into the building next year given your track record?"

The only way we can, by giving them what they deserve: passionate effort and winning hockey games

Any chance we get any of this?
