Shut out, in the shoot out.

No Tage?  No Dahlin?

Quinn and Tuch have been their best shooters this year

Tage hasn't done well in shootouts this season

Dahlin was probably completely gassed

I would think you would try Dahlin more.  Maybe he is awful on them in practice?  In his career he has now been in 38 shootouts, and he has 3 attempts. About 1 in every 13 shootouts he gets used.

Tage should be shooting first.

This team is still a bunch of pussies.

I don't have a problem with Tuch stepping up, and it shows good leadership, but it shouldn't have to be Tuch. It's quite apparent he cannot fight worth a crap and he's a top offensive player so it should be somebody else. We really need a 4th line tough guy.

I guess as a whole they are trying to stand up better but they just look ridiculous with all this gloves on slapping at people. I can bet you other teams see this and laugh at it. Go or don't go but stop this clown crap. Just ridiculous. Again, Benson has good instincts and attitude, but he's a kid and it should be somebody else. And in the other scrum Marchand just pins his arms which I guess was an act of kindness 🙂

Really, this is a joke and they would never hold up in a playoff series. Bennett would end somebody in the first minute and the series would be over.

Lastly, just as an aside, back when expansion hit and we lost Ullmark there was a moment we could have had Vanecek for next to nothing but whatever. Not suggesting he changes much but we do need a veteran NHL goalie still.

Oh right, I forgot. Kulich has to learn to keep his head up.

Horrible pass from 26, his fault more than panthers guy. He set kulich up

Correct, but Kulich needs more awareness too. Too many of these offensive guys get caught up in their own game and have a lack of awareness for where the other team's guys are on the ice. Hit was solid and legal. Marginal, but legal. Sabres could use a few guys that hit like that.

Sabres shot percentage is regressing huh?

A regression to the mean is always just around the corner when things are going well with this bunch. Too many flaws. I just hope there aren't many people that got sucked into that little outburst and thought that they were "figuring it out." Come October, they'll be the same calamitous mess they've always been.

Quinn made the pass

Panthers know how to play playoff hockey... take no prisoners... Sabres played about as tough as they can... which shows me how far they have to go to compete... going to be a long off season...

An overview of the game: Florida sat out their top 6 players. This Florida team is a Cup contending team. Overall, they had an edge in play using many backup players. We ended up losing in a shootout.

So if this is a team measuring stick game against an upper tier team, how much farther do the Sabres have to improve to become a
serious team?

And the bigger question is how do you do that with KA as your GM and TP as your owner?

I think it's a mistake to use 1 game as a measuring stick. The issues the Sabres have didn't change or get revealed yesterday.

They need a top 6 forward, 2 top 4 defenders, and a goalie. The same things they needed last offseason.

With this shootout loss, the Sabres maximum point total on the year is now 83. So they will have fewer points than a year ago. Meaning Don Granato coached the Sabres to back to back seasons with higher point totals than what Ruff will get out of the team this year.  Ruff is the oldest head coach in the league and in his last 11 season starts as a head coach he has two winning seasons.

I actually thought Kulich showed excellent awareness.  He saw it coming and stopped skating and got his hands up to protect himself.  Its the only reason he didn’t end up concussed on the play.  His arms took the brunt of it and prevented him from hitting his head on the ice when he went down.

I’m guessing it was a set play that Quinn didn’t recognize as a suicide pass in that situation.  Kulich did have the awareness to give up the puck and protect himself.  My take is “well done kid”.

Ive warmed up to Kulich considerably.  Seems a potential keeper.

I used this one game as an example of a measuring stick, not the full scope of a measuring stick. What's the team record for the season and for the past number of seasons? That gives you a fuller picture of the hockey operation over an extended period.

As you keenly noted, the Sabres have a number of needs, the same needs they had last offseason. They weren't addressed when they had the cap room and assets to do so. They didn't do it. (As you point out.) Who was the GM? The same then as it is now. Do you have confidence in this sycophant that he will smartly make enough moves to deal with the deficiencies that you listed? I don't.
