  • LGR4GM changed the title to Sabres recall Östlund from Rochester, April 4, 2025

Another Amerks player on a heater in the A called up to play limited 4th line minutes with no comparable skill on his line. It’s nice to get a look, but unless he’s paired with better players, it’s a waste of time imo.

It wont matter for the Sabres this year, but it will matter for the player.  They get a taste of action in the big leagues, get a nice pay check, are rewarded for their good year, and hopefully further motivated to make it full time.

It's an early vote of confidence from the organization and a reward for their play

I don’t disagree. But because it doesn’t matter for the Sabres, that’s why they should pair him with better skill. By all means, give him the taste, but at least make it flavorful for him.

Have him and Kulich rotate. Some minutes with TNT/Benson; some minutes with Malenstyn/Lafferty/Kozak whoever is in the lineup.

Heck, build an Amerks line for a few shifts of Kulich-Östlund-Kozak.

And after 2-3 games of NHL paychecks and speed, send him back down.

Putting him with Quinn and JJP would be fun, but maybe kind of risky

You don’t bring up an offensive creator and staple him to the 4th line.  It looks like Kozak is day to day.  Krebs or Lafferty can take over the 4th line center duties.  I suspect Östlund will center the 3rd line possibly between Zucker and Quinn

I would imagine this is because whatever happened to Kozak last game is still an issue.

I would hope he's not plugged in to Kozak's spot in the lineup, but that has been the case with Rosen's callups.

Subbing him for Krebs between Tuch and Zucker would be the best thing for him, but I'm not sure that's the best thing for the team, given the way Krebs has played.

In a season full of down notes, stuff like this is fun to see.

Östlund has definitely filled out since he got on stage on draft day looking like he was ready to apply for his learner's permit.

Why do you assume he's going to the 4th line?

A year early.

It's just a look.

Well worth the risk imo.

I agree, but they made sure to staple Rosen to the 4th line in his recent call up.

Because that’s what they tend to do with skilled call-ups from the A. Rosen is the latest example.

The only spot that makes sense is 3rd line.  Krebs would have to be deflated though.

Gotta be the youngest powerplay lineup in the league.

So much for 3rd line being the only thing that makes sense.  He’s gonna get low minutes and be very protected in his usage lol.

I like the move.

Rochester is making the playoffs, if they lose a game or two extra and move up or down a spot in the standings so be it.

I am one who thinks its good to 1.) Reward some of the young guys in Rochester, even for a game or two, with a few games with the big club.  2.) Give them a taste of the NHL, remind them what they are working for, See for yourself how they fit in (even in a short stint) and let them see for themselves how close/far away their game is by playing against NHL players.

I'd rather have him not slotted on a 4th line, but you still accomplish the above with him there.

Like I said, giving him a taste in the show is fine, but saddling him with Lafferty and Malenstyn is hardly any reward.
