Who has a chance to break this? I can't think of anyone currently that has a shot Matthews is the biggest threat. But he’s looking like a major breakdown risk and won’t reach the 1400 or so games he needs. Quote

bunomatic Posted Sunday at 06:23 PM Report Posted Sunday at 06:23 PM Great to see Ovi get the record but apparently the CIA lip readers were having a terrible time reading the Wayners wifes lips. Quote
Wyldnwoody44 Posted Sunday at 06:24 PM Author Report Posted Sunday at 06:24 PM I'm curious what the convo between him and Soroykin was lol. Both Russian and Ovi never scored on him before. Quote

This is why, if we are being honest, trying to compare people from different eras is actually impossible. You can only really compare players in the same era because outside of them it's a totally different sport. Quote

shrader Posted Sunday at 10:17 PM Report Posted Sunday at 10:17 PM Here’s a fun game. Go look at the all time goal leaders list and find the first guy who never scored a goal while you were alive. It’s a long search for anyone born before the 80s. Quote
Big Guava Posted Sunday at 10:59 PM Report Posted Sunday at 10:59 PM (edited) What's crazy is that Gretzky while he scored a ton of goals wasn't really known for that ..he was more known for his setting teammates up for goals as his over 1960 assists show... In fact, Gretzky has more assists than the 2nd player on the career points list has points (Jagr with 1921). That's absurd... So while it's great that Ovechkin broke the record, if Gretzky actually wanted to score 1300 goals, he easily could have which would have put the record out of reach for all eternity...but he did that with the assists record instead. Gretzky also has the 46 WHA goals. But then again, Ovechkin has the time missed to lockouts and covid. Oh wait, Gretzky had a lockout and a strike too, less games lost than Ovechkin though. Quote
Flashsabre Posted Sunday at 11:33 PM Report Posted Sunday at 11:33 PM Good for Ovi. A one of a kind player. The greatness of Gretzky was he wasn’t even considered a “goal scorer” per se. He was a point machine and playmaker extraordinaire. Gretzky was never the pure sniper like a Bossy or Kurri or Hull or Ovi. He was just so good that the goals came. Quote

True enough but the main point is that if Gretzky wanted to score a lot more goals, he easily could have, but his main talent was creating for others to score. Quote
JustOneParade Posted Sunday at 11:54 PM Report Posted Sunday at 11:54 PM Another way to look at Gretzky’s assist number. Averaged 98 assists per year for 20 years. Absurd indeed. Quote

There’s only one number I ever need to know to sum up his goal scoring: 92 Quote
JoeSchmoe Posted Monday at 12:19 AM Report Posted Monday at 12:19 AM I always thought goal scoring came so easily early in his career that Gretzky took a much higher interest in setting up teammates. Of course we don't know if that was truly the case, we can all agree he was a pass first player. And while Gretzky was pass first, Ovie is and always has been a shoot first, shoot second, and shoot third type player. Quote

mjd1001 Posted Monday at 01:11 PM Report Posted Monday at 01:11 PM I think Gretzky was a better overall player, but Ovechkin is the best goal scorer I have ever seen. In terms of pure ability to score goals, Ovi leads, followed closely by Lemieux, the little I remember of Bossy, and possibly Brett Hull (at his peak). Quote
Brawndo Posted 23 hours ago Report Posted 23 hours ago Budweiser sent out congratulatory beers to all the goaltenders that Ovi faced during the chase that did not get scored on. Devon Levi was one of them 3 Quote
