Sabres Trade Dylan Cozens/Dennis Gilbert and 2026 2nd Round Pick to Ottawa for Josh Norris and Bernard Docker

A quick look at the analytics this year, he plays pretty well with Tkachuk. But when you remove him from Tkachuk's line...not so good. The team allows a lot of goals when he is on the ice without Tkachuk as his linemate.  But the numbers are a bit better than Cozen's are with anyone on the Sabres.

When he was on the ice with Tkachuk, they allowed only one goal every 32 minutes.

When Norris was on the ice with anyone else but Tkachuk, allowed one goal every 18 minutes.

So maybe Norris isn't going to be a great defender, we'll have to wait and see. Analytics aren't the game though, on ice will tell the story in the long run.

The trade makes sense imo. It just falls into the categories, for me of

A) too late

b) too little: re - doing anything to mitigate my opinion of the GM 

a shake up type trade is wise, on its face

They may be similar, but sometimes shuffling the deck can help out. 
Maybe we traded a 6 of clubs for a 6 of spades, but it gives us the flush….

I’m surprised with the amount of disappointment that this trade is bringing. Norris isn’t a perfect player by any means sure and he’s similar to Cozens yes, but he’s finishing at a higher rate than Cozens 

 

Most importantly you take a player consistently getting caved in defensively and switch him with someone that gets caved in but not as frequently. 

 

Getting Cozens off the team was a net positive regardless of what the return was, his time as a Sabre was done by the end of November

Sabres have scored the most goals per game in the NHL over the last 30 games at 3.43 and are 8th overall this season at 3.18(fractionally away from being top 5).

Exactly who is creating these if all we have are finishers? Makes no sense...SOMEONE has to be creating them to be producing at that level.

Well those are this years numbers.

If you extend the numbers over the past 3 years, they are a bit better.

Over the last 3 years combined:  With Tkachuk, one goal allowed every 21. 2 minutes. Without Tkachuk, one goal allowed every 19.4 minutes.

So if you were to actually take away this year, he actually had about the same analytics (in terms of goals even strength on ice allowed) with or without Tkachuk.

Again, just some quick numbers....on the ice is always a bit different than pure analytics.

It could be.

I'm not super high on Byram right now....and I'd rather have him not in this trade as his value would be pretty high to move him to somewhere else.

But if it was Bryam, I'd still be ok with this deal.
