Minnesota is an odd case. Yes, the Parise/Suter buyouts destroyed the cap, but they're still a veteran team and all their kids are hitting this season.

  • Boldy is finally playing consistent and looks like a 1W (his contract kicked in this season). It'd be like if Cozens' breakout season had been the start of an upward trend instead of any regression.
  • Rossi has reached his potential as a top-6 center while on his ELC (for comparison, this would be like Kulich playing his best hockey and in the top 6 from day one this season).
  • And Faber...  Faber was on the top pairing for Team USA by ice-time with Slavin in both games against Canada (his contract doesn't kick in until next season when he'll make slightly more than Power). And that ice-time was warranted and mirrors his play on the Wild all season.

Beyond Faber, their defense is very mature and don't forget Spurgeon's return to the lineup this season.

All of those things are true.  But they are 7th overall and we are 29th.  There is a lot that Adams could have done differently and better to bridge that gap half-way.

I'm not a religious person, but I heard a phrase yesterday that I think applies to Adams:  "God blesses you with good-luck and then curses you by making you think you are smart."  Adams was blessed by one of the largest single strokes of luck that an NHL GM has had in the past 5 years; that was Tage Thompson going from a guy who looked like he might be a bust to being one of the most dynamic offensive players in hockey.  That single stroke of luck, more than anything else, bumped us from last over-all in 20-21, to being a team on the rise in 21-22, to being a young team that missed the playoffs by a point in 22-23.  And Adams convinced himself that it was because he was making smart, progressive, moves, and that all he had to do was stay the course.  He needed to understand, or needed somebody with more experience to explain to him, that expecting the next youngster to hit like Thompson, is not a plan.

He didn’t misfire. This is his plan. He doesn’t care about how long it will take no matter what he says. It’s all about long term financials

Yes, but it was actually about the near term financials.  They have been running lean since Botterill's firing in 2020.  I have to admire Botterill for refusing to buy into Pegula's new plan, fired just 3 weeks after he was given a vote of confidence by Kim and Terry.

Read this article and then think about the last 5 year since Botterill's firing.  It's pretty sad.

Tage is our Kaprizov. Dahlin is a stud. There are lots of good pieces here.

The Minnesota Wild have almost $15 million in dead cap. They are currently tied for 7th overall. Marcus Johansson is a middle-6 winger for them.

It cannot be overstated how badly our GM misfired on his roster construction and coaching decisions this past off-season.

Guerin is a good GM. Adams is not.

Why do you think it was about near term finances? I’m convinced that the cost cutting was because Terry was planning the new stadium and needed all the cash he can get. He’s on the hook for the $500 million dollar plus overrun. Obviously the new investors will help ease that burden but that’s one hell of a hit even for someone like Terry.

basically robbing Peter to pay Paul.

I rather would like to look at the teams in top and their defense. A team like Capitals were going down, then they added Thompson in net, and Chychrun and Roy on D. Carolina is a well coached machine with a playmaker like Aho and a big leader in Staal, but to me it is their defense that keeps them in a playoff position. Just as example. Otherwise they are not that much better than us.

There is a lot of talking of our offensive players like Cozens and Quinn, and I agree they have struggled, and they are a part of the teamdefense. Still, to me, the big reason we are where we are is that we don't have defenders good enough to defend. It is all on the GM.

Having a first line that produce is a important thing to have, and in the trade discussion, those who have played on first line recently are them I like to keep. A major retool is needed.

Yes, all near term finances.  Basically to cover the cost commitments that he knows he has.

my idea of near term is months to a couple years.

When he cut costs he didn’t have the Bills investors and was funding it all himself (the overrun). I’m sure he was expecting to not recoup that money for years. Now that he has the investors, that should ease his burden tremendously.

I’m hoping (not holding my breath) that he starts to invest more money into the Sabres now that he isn’t funding both teams completely out of his own pocket.
