K-9 Posted February 13 Report Posted February 13 Our question for veterans, both active or not, should always be, “What more can we do for you and your families.” But Trump and Musk insist on doing less. Neither has a clue about the unique challenges veterans face. Shame on them. https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/political-commentary/trump-musk-military-veterans-war-doge-1235266086/
Hank Posted February 13 Report Posted February 13 That article is behind a pay wall. Do you know if it pertains to the Hiring Freeze E.O. dated Jan 20? If so, this paragraph is in the E.O.: This order does not apply to military personnel of the armed forces or to positions related to immigration enforcement, national security, or public safety. Moreover, nothing in this memorandum shall adversely impact the provision of Social Security, Medicare, or Veterans’ benefits. In addition, the Director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) may grant exemptions from this freeze where those exemptions are otherwise necessary

Shame on them. https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/political-commentary/trump-musk-military-veterans-war-doge-1235266086/ Leaving the military is more complicated than I gave credit to until it was my turn. Service components have transition assistance programs which are multi-day seminars. I don't think they are VA lead. However, the VA does provide transition assistance and arguably the best part is compensation, housing, and education. Cutting VA personnel would rationally result in longer processing times for those services. At present my next degree plan is on hold because transferring to a new school means aligning my GI Bill to that new school. The VA is consistently slammed for needing reform due to processing times and efforts to refine the VA should focus on improving manpower, not cutting it. As for the claim DOGE will disproportionately affect hiring veterans, I think you could take the numbers and say that about any group, veterans, by race, by gender, so on. Federal jobs come with the rating of GG, GS, and others. Those are government civilian positions. Contractors are different and there is a plethora of those positions, many of which align to military occupations. Meaning military skills directly translate to civilian employment. Then there's skill bridge opportunities, also with contract companies. I do agree only hiring one person for every four that are released negatively impacts veterans but also impacts nonveterans. 7 minutes ago, Hank said: That article is behind a pay wall. If it is the same E.O. then most of the article would be BS.

It did not pertain to the Hiring Freeze EO of 1/20, only to the cuts and hiring freezes at the Dept. of Veterans Affairs targeted by DOGE and how that will impact veterans who depend on those vital services. IIRC, it mentioned a subsequent memo regarding the EO which said that any exemptions to the hiring freeze must be approved by the OPM and Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

You may have seen me mention before I'm retired army. I get all my Healthcare, medications and dental through the VA. I also receive VA disability along with my pension. I'm also a VSO with the America legion and DAV helping veterans file disability claims and navigate their education and medical benefits. My point is, if anything Trump does negatively effects the VA it will impact me personally, as well as the veterans that I help. If that happens I'll be on here bitching about it.
LGR4GM Posted February 14 Report Posted February 14 Unclear what effect this will have on things; "The Department of Veterans Affairs announced that it was dismissing more than 1,000 employees, including certain probationary employees. There are more than 43,000 probationary employees across the department, but the “vast majority” of them were exempt from firings, the agency said." https://www.nbcnews.com/news/trump-mass-firings-grocery-limit-egg-morning-rundown-rcna192177

IMO, we cannot give back enough to veterans and their families. So I hope as you do that these new policies don’t impact you and others who’ve more than earned our support. But I’m not certain that these new policies won’t hurt veterans in some way, shape or form, regardless. Nor can I just ignore that 30% of the federal government workforce is comprised of veterans. There are 2.4 million federal workers and that 30% represents 720,000 employees who are veterans. I hope the Trump/DOGE cuts in staffing across the federal workforce doesn’t impact them too severely.

I'm not certain either. In truth, I'm extremely concerned. All us veterans are. Thank you for the kind words.

LGR4GM Posted February 15 Report Posted February 15 The DOGE website is unsecure. Multiple parties figured out they could push updates to the site and extract information.
