So unless there is a significant change in demographics, this tournament could max out at six teams. Would still be fun to watch. It's too bad we'll never see Czechoslovakia again. Quote

That number for Russia felt light, so I did a search and found 61 Russians have appeared in an NHL game this year: https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/nationality/active-russian-nhl-players-2024-25-stats.html Edited February 14 by Porous Five Hole Quote

Definitely not accurate to the day. Quote

Depends on when chatgpt last updated it's internal info repository. Even if the numbers are off a bit, it's a good baseline. Saw an article that in the next 15yrs the US will overtake Canada for most NHL players. 1 Quote

Both countries still produce quality hockey players. I used to go to games there in the early 90s. Saw Jagr’s home town team—Kladno—play a few times. Quality hockey to watch. Always root for Czech players since I lived there for 2 years; have a soft spot in my heart for Kulich. (less a fan of the name Czechia than Czech Republic 😉 ) Quote

LGR4GM Posted February 14 Report Posted February 14 Finland has a problem and a lot of it starts with their Liiga play. That league is just so slow in transition and lacks. Just straight up lacks in general. They need to change up how they play the sport at home because we have seen it with drafted players as well, where the pace of place and physicality of NA hockey is just overwhelming to them. Yes, I know several NHL players are on that roster, but my point still stands. If these 4 teams were the 4 NA jr leagues, you'd have the US and Canada as the WHL and OHL, Sweden is the USHL (I recognize the fact most of team usa is USHL alum), and Finland is the Q. Quote

GASabresIUFAN Posted February 14 Report Posted February 14 Just got a chance to see the highlights of the USA/Finland game. Nice shot by Joki to get the first goal for Finland. Unfortunately for Finland the Sabres curse kicked in and they gave up 6 straight goals after taking an early lead. Quote

Ok, the Sabres organization and the Sabres culture is bad right now, but "Sabres Curse" is really a stretch. . ROR, Eichel, Reinhart, etc., did not curse their new teams. They won Cups. We have enough Sabres reality to complain about without making up new things. 2 Quote
JoeSchmoe Posted February 14 Report Posted February 14 Extremely small sample size, but during Wednesday's game 37 year old Sidney Crosby was the best player on the ice. McDavid might have jaw dropping speed that prime Crosby never had, but IMO that's it. Crosby's hockey IQ and compete level is orders better than McDavid. In fact, I'd go so far to say McDavid has just above average IQ at best... He just makes up for it with athletism. Crosby has all-time level IQ. When everybody on the ice is so good that you can't win on athletism alone (McDavid/MacKinnon), 87's intangibles lock him in as the #1 player in the world since Lemieux. 1 1 Quote
