Stoner Posted 9 hours ago Report Posted 9 hours ago Smell, we're going for a bag skate. Ole Punch threw his beaver hat across the office and they called in Dodo to talk to him. It didn't work. Hope you didn't have the sausage gravy for breakfast. It's interesting. It appears the Far and Wide/God Keep version didn't kick in until the anthem became official in 1980. 3 Quote

The words have changed a few times over the years, most recent was 2018 to make it gender neutral. https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/02/01/582520660/canadian-national-anthem-revised-with-gender-neutral-language Here is the last change ^, making your thumbs down incorrect and inappropriate. There are other articles on the changes over the years Before that, whatever Joe is singing is anyone's guess, but he sang it like that for a long time with no issues raised. -- signing out on O'Canada Quote

I was surprised when I heard the current version, but I like it better. Great Anthem! Quote

I've yet to see any source saying that what Joe was singing in the video linked above was ever a known version of the song. But I'd be happy to be set straight! 2 minutes ago, Pimlach said: https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/02/01/582520660/canadian-national-anthem-revised-with-gender-neutral-language Here is the last change ^, making your thumbs down incorrect and inappropriate. Is there any source that makes Joe's version legit? 1 minute ago, Pimlach said: Great Anthem! None better, really. This song was belted out toward the end of *many* weddings in my younger days -- just a bunch of sweaty dudes sharing a song and some love. Quote

I have no clue if there is any legitimacy to each of the alternate versions or when they were a thing. https://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/cur/socstud/foundation_gr3/blms/3-1-2d.pdf 2 Quote
Carmel Corn Posted 8 hours ago Report Posted 8 hours ago Look forward to hearing the anthem tonight….hope he still uses the organ as accompaniment. I don’t know why most don’t have music in the background as I think it makes the anthems better. The guy in Chicago is still my favorite….really gets the arena going before the game. Quote

I haven't gone fully down the rabbit hole, but he was singing the original 1918 version. The Far and Wide version appears to have been adopted on July 1, 1980 when Oh, Canada officially became the anthem. I haven't found any clips of Joe after summer 1980. I think his music stopped shortly after. 23 minutes ago, shrader said: I just found this googling. The anthem is very short already, we don’t need to hear them standing on guard 15 times during it. 1 Quote

Yes, I'll make sure to tune in. I'm hoping that he becomes the permanent singer again. The Sabres anthems have been terrible, I wonder if they even audition them or just send the singers out. Someone called the Sabres Anthem singers the "Americas Got Talent Auditions", these need to end. I'm sure there are better, but I'm not sure we've seen anyone better in Buffalo since he stopped. 1 1 Quote
