The only anthem singer I ever made sure I watched was Rene Rancourt from Boston.

The Montreal singer whose name i cannot remember going from English to French was always nice to hear.

He was the most annoying, and the most fun (at the same time), anthem singer I have ever seen.

Are each of y'all too young to remember "tenor Joe Byron?"

Nothing fancy. But put some respect on that man's name!

... Also. Wth?! These are NOT the words I recall from the Canadian national anthem.

I'm not trying to play dumb (It just comes natural to me) but is there a significance to this? I generally want to know other than he wasn't allowed to sing because he didn't get vaccinated during covid from what I'm gathering reading. Is he a famous singer? Do tell!

The significance is Doug sang the anthem for a long time. It’s nostalgic just like Rob Ray’s career.
Doug is a local guy who likes performing & is passionate in his religious beliefs.  I’ll let him tell you:

He’s just your average “nut” who overdoses on orange juice. This guy is a real hoot!

He butchered it, I think.

I recognized the voice but not the name or face so I'm officially too young, which I will gladly take 😄

The gov’t is forcing Doug Allen to sing the Anthem at the Sabres game?  A cruel and unusual form of punishment.

It's not that bad.  He can sing and leave.  He's not being forced to stay and watch the game.

Doug Allen back for a game?  They are pulling out all stops to try and get fannies in the seats. If I was him, I would  tell them to go pound salt.

What’s next?  Finally giving “swords of a thousand men” a try as the goal song?😂

Nice, I appreciate the information. I’ll be honest I’ve been watching hockey since the mid 80’s and never heard this guy in my life but I also used to tape all games and get rid of everything but the fights lol so I was probably just oblivious back then.

Over the top?

I'll chime in. The guy's up front about his Evangelical Christian faith. But is it "over the top" for him just to mention it and state a summary of his creed?

Btw, I ask this as someone who thinks most Evangelicals focus unduly (even exclusively) on Christ's death and resurrection, and the resulting salvation of people's souls, instead of focusing, y'know, on what the dude [reportedly] said and did, and  just how he rolled generally (being poor and itinerant -- hanging out with people whom society shunned).

Intolerance is a sphere, not a one-way street.

I think Joe's words were correct at the time.  The words have changed a few times over the years, most recent was 2018 to make it gender neutral.

I wondered if that might be the case. But I noodled around a bit and could find no indication that the song ever used those lyrics. I can't remember hearing it sung that way.

I do remember when a few words changed.  Never gave it second thought.  Just figured a few words changed and that was that.

My Canadian friends never said he was singing it wrong at that time.  Anything is possible I guess.
