When as a fan have you tasted a championship?

SF Giants 2010, 2012 and 2014 are directly my favorite MLB team however my passion isn't quite what it is for the local teams

The NY Giants Super Bowls versus Brady are my Dad's favorite team winning and the same goes for the Blackhawks so they are both my 2nd favorites

Those Met's, from that vintage, were, between Stawberry and Gooden, about the best signature one could expect on on one's glove, from where one got gloves at the time, hehe.  If you weren't a weirdo from Scranton.

But if you were a weirdo from Scranton, at least you weren't from Boca Raton, which was the worst in those days. 

At the very least, one could pretend to be from Buffalo, though, which, in those days, was the coolest.

The first ever sporting event I attended when I was a young kid was a Buffalo Stallions game… live and - - kickin’ at the Aud!

No more Buffalo soccer so next closest local team is TFC.

You all know Bruins are my B team. 2011 was glorious. I kind of remember the 70s as well. Orr through the air was my first ever hockey game that I watched. 

Steelers multiple times (but not recently). I grew up in the 1970s remember. 

Hamilton Tiger Cats have been a horrible CFL franchise as of late but I have experienced them winning the Grey Cup a few times. 

Small interest in the Raptors winning as my son in law is a big fan. We bonded there a little. I pretend to be a Celtics fan though just to have fun with him. 

Sabres losing to Philly was painful. I felt bad for the Bills 4 losses in a row. Bills were kind of my B team in football. I was a big Bruce Smith fan. Also I hated Dallas (still do). Those were hard to watch. 

Otherwise, Team Canadas in Olympics and World stuff.

I am one of the very few people who saw a TFC home match in 2020 as they allowed a few thousand fans in for their final match of the season in Hartford vs Inter Miami.

On the subject of MLS I forgot to mention that the Red Bulls are the Anti-Sabres with the longest current playoff streak (15 seasons) in major US/Canadian sports (and have only missed the playoffs 4 times in the 29 season history of the league). Sadly we have never won it all (although we've won 3 supporters shields in that time).

I’ve had some adopted teams win championships (Dodgers, Syracuse Orangemen, Bears during the Walter Payton era), but none of them had the shear emotion that a Buffalo team winning a championship would have.

I've lived in Fort Worth much longer than I lived in Buffalo, actually, and since Buffalo doesn't have an MLB team and has switched farm club allegiances between Pittsburgh, Cleveland, the Mets and Toronto, I feel no special allegiance to any of those teams.  I liked the Dodgers when we lived in L.A., the Tigers when we lived in Detroit, and for 30+ years the Rangers have been my team here.

Yeah... the two championships I cited were great, but as you say they were both adopted teams.  Not the same as a Buffalo championship.

I had season tickets to SU basketball when I was there in the 1980's, so 2003 was the only championship I can remember rooting for.  Unfortunately, I was on a 3 week detail during the tourney and could not watch any of the games.  My boss texted me with updates though!

I'll exult if (when?) it happens.

But I'm no longer buying into the received wisdom, the immutable truth pushed by Big Sports (and endorsed or parroted by millions of fans, supporters). That is: Sports fandom is misery, torture if your favourite team can't "win it all."

I've supported Liverpool F.C. since 2006. They won the Premier League in (2019-)2020 (all COVID era titles are weird) and they may win it again this year (which would be dope). And they won a Champions League title in 2019.

But those don't really count, for me. I enjoy supporting the club, but, in my heart, I know it's just not the same feeling as supporting hometown teams that I've supported my whole life.

In point of fact, I'll say that even supporting my college's teams (undergraduate only, for those who claim to be diehard supporters of where they went to graduate/professional school (c'mon, man)) is a tier below supporting the Sabres and Bills. It's still meaningful to see my college teams win (and hockey's won several national championships since I graduated (and was in the Frozen Four while I was there)). Supporting my college teams is more meaningful than my support of Liverpool, but it's not the same as supporting the Sabres or Bills.

I'm a Buffalo fan through and through, so not a whole lot of luck with pro sports.  I am a Yankees fan and they've won a few in my lifetime, but it's just not the same as my hometown team (and a small market team) winning it all.  I lived in Chicago during the Michael Jordan era, so I was there for all 6 titles, plus one for the White Sox and 1 for the Blackhawks before I moved away.  I was not a fan of those teams, so while it was fun to be there, it didn't mean that much to me.

I graduated from Michigan, so they've had a NCAA basketball championship, two additional final four appearances, and two football championships in the time I was there/since I graduated.  Their hockey team also won it one year, but college hockey just isn't as big as the other two sports.  I really enjoyed those victories, but again, they didn't mean as much to me as a Buffalo team getting to the top of the mountain would.

Still holding out hope for the Bills and Sabres to get one in my lifetime.  Obviously, the Bills are close and the Sabres are about as far away as could be imagined.

Sign me up for this. I’ve gotten a bunch of “how upset are you” questions this week. The only thing that makes me upset in all of this is having to answer that stupid question over and over.

I never attended a minute at TCU, but I do have a certain affinity for the school, since I live 3 miles from campus, and the Fort Worth Bills Backer bar is in the middle of campus.  It's hard not to be part of the TCU community if you live in southwest Fort Worth.  I'm generally happy when they win, but it's more of a casual, bandwagon fandom.  In 2022 I was on the bandwagon when the football team went to the national championship game, but I was over it almost immediately when they got blown out by Georgia 65–7.  Football, basketball and baseball are all good sports for TCU in general, although they all have their ups and downs.

Bills and Sabres, yeah.

Baseball, I was a HUGE Braves fan in the 80's and 90's - thanks TBS! Their WS victory in the 90's was awesome. I did not follow much recently, so their most recent WS victory meant less to me.

Professional shooty hoops - I mean, what kid didn't follow Jordan and the Bulls in the 90's?? It was epic and amazing.

College american rules football - grew up rooting for The U, so a few natties to be celebrated there. (I don't have time to get into all the family drama that had me end up as a 'Canes CFB fan ... it just is what it is, lol)

Sadly, I was 2 yrs old the last time the US men's slappy puck team won gold in the Olympics.

I agree with the sentiment I think @That Aud Smell was putting out ... 4 "big game" losses plus no goal just kinda ... broke something in me where I now just refuse to let my personal happiness be dictated by a bunch of hired mercenaries doing things in the name of the city I still consider "my city". I get more upset when one of the beer league teams I play on loses in the generally meaningless playoffs than I did Sunday over the Bills. I only stress over what I can control.

I'm a huge fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL and in my old-enough-to-remember life, we were champs in 1989, 2007, and 2013 (which I witnessed in person in Regina. There were literally tears of joy from many in the crowd in 2013. And Tom Hanks and Martin Short were in attendance!)
