Looking over the costs, if Buffalo wants to move players now, it might be a really good time. There are not a lot of sellers but there are a lot of buyers.

Absolutely. Folks are getting assets for rentals. If Zucker isn't re-signed then you absolutely need to ship him out today while you can get a 1st and a 3rd. At the very least, give yourself an extra asset to move for a player in the summer.

Not a trainwreck waiting to happen in his own zone? Or rather... he's not a Sabre anymore.

It is amazing how much Risto with the Sabres reminds me of Cozens with the Sabres.

-Kinda big, takes dumb penalties

-will abandon the puck at the exact wrong time to finish a check.

-Fans loved them at first but many soured on them when they realized they just don't think the game that well.

-Former high first round picks.

-LOOK like NHL players in practice but doesn't translate to the game.

-Signed a pretty big, long term contract with the team in their early 20's before even the team realized their flaws.

-A HUGE minus player in the +/-  compared to teammates, where some people would defend them by saying +/- is a flawed stat...but in the end it wasn't flawed with them because they are the REASON for those -'s.

Hopefully it ends the same way...where Cozens gets traded to a team that overlooks his overall game and they overpay the Sabres for him.

Cozens IS the forward version of what Risto was for the Sabres as a D-man.

They're going to need to empty the vault for any extension.  I'd say that at this point, it's very obvious that he wants to go to free agency and cash out big time.

Rasmus Ristolainen

Alexander Nylander

Casey Mittelstadt

Dylan Cozens

Jack Quinn

Matthew Savoie

All picked in the 7-9 range. Pretty much all were/have been disappointments. Mitts is clearly the best of the bunch and appeared to be carving out a decent role for himself here as a 2C before being dealt to the Avs where his career has kind of taken a step back...though that might be a function of the depth ahead of him in Colorado. He was of course traded for a completely redundant piece in Bo Byram (a 4th overall pick) who, despite the occasional flash of ability, has been very "meh."

Risto is at best a middle-pairing defenseman at his absolute best, bottom pair on a good team.

Nylander was an unmitigated NHL flop.

Mitts looks like a decent middle-6 forward who netted a defenseman whose style of play we didn't need.

Cozens has regressed horribly after a very strong 3rd season and would benefit from a change of scenery. Jury's out on him, but early indications aren't great.

Quinn flashed promise early but has been almost entirely invisible this season. Have to wonder if injuries took their toll on him. Jury still kind of out, but doesn't look good.

Savoie was traded for McCleod, a serviceable bottom-6 centerman on a good team. Jury is out on Savoie, but Edmonton likes him.

What's all of this say? The Sabres need to stay away from drafting in the 7-9 range.

Does the short term of removing Cozens and adding Norris get them up to 8th overall by the end of the season (particularly if a team jumps ahead of them via the lottery)?

I doubt it. I honestly don't think Norris moves the needle much either way.
