Watching the same group of players all the time makes you just feel part of their team trying to achieve a goal, winning.

In the end it really doesn't matter. **** ****'s 1983 OT goal didn't ruin my life. Heck, maybe it's even a good memory in some way.

We like a good story with good vs. evil. The story feels better when the good side wins. Of course, "Good is a point of view."

What we're left with is the question, is our choice of team the side of good or the side of evil? Or the third side of moral victory?

Mere tribalism? Do we all have low self esteem?

Why isn't the show enough?

The show has to be interesting though...

I can guarantee Netflix would not give them a second season.

IMO professional sports is the modern day mixture of gladiator arena, ancient Olympics, and city state warfare. Without the intentional killing.

The “tribalism” is bragging rights over another city for just one day. The battle for resources is the trophy as the resource.

I watch the Sabres, even when they are not doing well, because I like hockey.  But I always feel better after a win than I do a loss.  I guess maybe I like the Sabres more than I like hockey since I don't watch much hockey other than the Sabres ( and playoff or Olympic hockey. )  I always am happy when the team I root for wins.  Isn't that natural?

You made good parallels, but the question of why we care about winning?

It’s in our DNA.  Being better, being stronger and smarter, improving so that can get even getting more, winning gets you wealth and power and notoriety, surviving requires winning.  We can’t help it, it’s there in everyone.  Some more than others.

I think you’re onto something here.  Pro sports are one thing when it comes to competition, but even as a kid…the point is to be successful/win.  Duck Duck Goose, Uno, Candy Land…you play to win the game from a young age. You learn to care about winning early. That explains why competitors want to win.
The second step is why do we care about winning at NHL hockey as a fan? It’s the hometown team, but no one is from the hometown.  The players are mercenaries.

Why do we care about them and this? My answer is because I was in the building when Derek Plante ended OT game seven against Ottawa. Euphoria. The building shook. that felt AMAZING. I will chase that high for the rest of my life. I had nothing to do with it but react, but it was FUN! That’s why we care about winning.

If they bring in chariots with spikes I'd be the first one lined up for season tickets.

Only if the gladiators have 44 Ds right?

BTW, is 44 a good number for that area? Kinda seems big, like the whole body is big.  Like 38 triple F seems more my style.  At least that’s what my wife is 🙂
