Gavin McKenna is currently outpacing McDavid in his D-1 yr.

What does this mean? I think I used to know, but now I’m thinking I never really knew what this meant.

He's a 2026, so this is his draft year minus 1, next year will be his draft year/draft zero year.

D-1 = Draft Year Minus 1 year (so the year before they are draft eligible)

DY = Draft Year (Your team can pick them in June)

DY+1 = Draft Year Plus 1 year (so the first year after they have been drafted)

Gavin McKenna just turned 17 and will not be draft eligible until 2026. His draft -1 year (this year) has him pacing above what Connor McDavid did in his draft -1 year. Currently McKenna is 1st in the WHL for all players in terms of points with 60pts in 30 games. He is 2nd in the WHL in terms of PPG behind DY+1 Andrew Cristall who turns 20 in February. You want generational talent, the other workhorse from Whitehorse is your guy. That's right, Gavin is from the same place as Cozens and played with his brother in the u15 league there back in the day (2019). If McKenna keeps up his current pace (which he won't because of WJC) he would end the year with 41g, 128pts. That would rank him 6th overall since 2004/5 in terms of pts in the WHL. It would rank him 2nd for 17yr olds in the WHL in terms of pts in a season. Connor Bedard who played his 17yr old season 5 months older due to his July bday tops him with 143pts. Zach Benson btw, is 9th overall for 17yr olds in the WHL since 2004/5 with 98.

Michael Misa is currently on pace for 65g and 132 points in the OHL. Since 2004/5 that would rank him overall at 4th. If you look at draft year only, he would be 2nd only to Patrick Kane who was 3 months older and 62g, 145pts. The only player with more goals was John Tavares with  72 in this draft -2 year, which is an astounding feat really. Tavares hit 58 in his draft year.

Porter Martone is currently on pace for 50g and 129pts. This would put him in a tie for 3rd for draft eligible guys behind Kane and Misa and tied with Dylan Strome.

Other players of note in their draft year around these totals are: Mitch Marner, Wyatt Johnson, Connor McDavid (who did 120pts in 47 games) McDavid's ppg pace is the best in the OHL to this day with Kane and 19yr old Rob Schremp the only others in the ballpark. Misa is at a 2.03ppg and Martone is at 2.08ppg.

McKenna is at a 2.0ppg pace currently. Again D-1 though
