Per Ruff, Greenway is having surgery and will miss a significant amount of time

$3 million in LTIR space!

Was it Elliott Friedman who summarized the situation as:  "Pegula and Adams don't think they have built a good enough team, so why spend more money"?

Here is a list of veteran forwards, playing for teams that are out of the playoff hunt, none of whom have any trade protection, and who are pending UFAs (so they wouldn't prevent us from giving extensions to anyone else):  Frank Vatrano, Brock McGinn, Joel Armia, Jake Evans, Michael Granlund, Luke Kunin, Nico Sturm, Ryan Donato, Gustav Nyquist. I didn't say it was an exciting list. Of course, we are firmly in the territory of 168 days late and 8 million dollars in unused cap space short, but there are players out who could help and who we should be able to beat any offers for.  Then again, maybe at this point any player that we trade for would be so negative about coming to Buffalo that it would do more harm than good.

Dang, he's one of the few guys who looked like he gave a ***** when he was on the ice. Him, Benson, Kozak....I might be missing someone else.

With his subtraction the overall percentage of “soft” in our lineup has just increased by several fold

Definitely.

They could have grabbed Wagner off waivers to temporarily fill the hole. Not that Wagner's great, he's a faded aging vet but he hits people, works hard and hates to lose. They don't ever look for immediate short term fixes though. Winning doesn't matter.

Greenway must have back issues. Always getting hurt. This just makes him harder to deal at the deadline 🙂

Zucker did for a while but he's probably shifting towards staying healthy for the trade deadline now.

Cozens looks like he cares.  Krebs cares. Clifton cares.

I thought it was interesting after the Habs game that two of the three post game scrums that were aired on tv were with McLeod & Clifton. I think a lot of guys care. I just think they don’t have enough talent to compete or too much panic when it goes sideways.

Most if the guy listed above seem to scored goals on us just about every time we play them.

Granlund has never been known for defense, but he is capable of putting up 2C points. I just don't think San Jose would move him for a lowball offer until the deadline -- he provides a solid veteran scoring buffer for their kids.

This probably effectively ends Greenway's time with the Sabres, which is too bad because his skill set is something any NHL team can use in its 3rd (honestly, 4th line going into the future) line. Along with Zucker he has certainly been the most consistent forward this season.
