The Jacobs Famly (Delaware North) wants to buy the Sabres but it gets complcated.

-this is on hfboards. It comes from a guy in Boston that mods confirmed is connected. I won’t link because I don’t think that is allowed but you can go there and read the thread. He replies a lot and has some interesting info about the entire situation. Anyways herehere is what he says initially:

”This rumor has been percolating in Boston for a few weeks and spawns from the Celtics being up for sale. Delaware North simply can't afford the Celtics who could be sold for $5 BILLION

The six children of Jeremy Jacobs now own the Bruins and Delaware North owns TD Garden. The family feels they can build a new arena downtown to replace the flawed KeyBank Center.

But for this to work you need a third team and the Penguins are the perfect fit as Terry Pegula has strong Pennslynaia connections and the Penguins are currently owned by the Red Sox.

Fenway Sports Group then winds up with the Bruins/TD Garden and can overpay for the Celtics and prevent another arena from being built.

The one thing nobody outside of the Jacobs family knows is the health of Jeremy.”

TAKE WITH A GIANT GRAIN OF SALT.

They said Jacob’s hasn’t been seen in 2 years and missed the Bruins Centennial event recently. Jacob’s said the Bruins wouldn’t be sold while he was alive but his kids could do as they please once he has passed.

It’s too crazy of an idea but I think Delaware North is probably the best option down the line to keep the Sabres in Buffalo. They could build an arena and control all the concessions.

ONE CAN DREAM😁

I remember a 2 team exchange involving the Celtics.   John Y Brown after selling off the Buffalo Braves’ best players swapped the Braves for the Celtics so that the then current Celtics owner, who was from San Diego, could move the Braves to SD.   ….and that was how the Clippers were born.

It was also the last time I cared about pro basketball.

A lot of Bruins fans think Jacobs is cheap 🙂

This is true. The opinion of Jacobs as an owner in Boston is not that different from what ours is of Terry. Of course Boston fans are so spoiled they measure teams by title droughts rather than playoff droughts.

Jacobs does have a cheapskate reputation.  His teams also have a reputation that suggests winning is expected, not just tolerated.

As intriguing as it sounds, this scenario seems highly implausible.

I stopped reading after Delaware North “can’t afford”

The company is flush with cash reserves. They may want to sell but by no means because they can’t afford anything.

The sons want their own ventures in the sports market so who knows but ability to pay will never factor in the equation.

This sounds pretty complex, not sure that it could be pulled off... I will say Jacobs is known as cheap, however, he hires at least moderately competent people, he has won a cup in recent history and his teams are remarkably consistent with identity. Not that a move like this could or would ever happen... but pie in the sky... I would view this as a net plus for the organization simply for the over all breaking of this vicious self fulfilling cycle of futility.

The Fenway group being interested in the Bruins makes lots of sense. Delaware North having interest in the Sabres makes some sense to me. Pegula getting the Penguins in the deal is the tough part for me to wrap my head around. The NHL will remember how awful things were in Pittsburgh pre-Lemieux and again pre-Crosby. Letting one of the league’s current worst owners take over that market doesn’t seem like a great idea.

That reputation has been dead for probably 20 years at this point.

A lot of Sabres fans would sign up immediately for any plan that (a) keeps the Sabres in Buffalo and (b) gets them a new owner.  Could the new ownership be worse?  Well, yeah, it's possible.  The way large corporate interests are buying up sports teams and news organizations, and then running them as cash cows instead of teams interested in winning championships and news organizations reporting the news, is concerning.

Delaware North is a Buffalo company with two of the brothers living in Buffalo. It would be the best option for Terry if he were to sell.

The thing I think a lot of people miss is “that if Terry sells then someone will move it out of town”

How could Pegula sell the Sabres and let them leave Buffalo and still own the Bills? Couldn’t happen. People would skewer him. So he would either be selling everything Bills and Sabres related or selling the Sabres to a group to keep the team in Buffalo. If he ever plans to sell at all.

I agree, I am not convinced if he sells the team it is leaving after 54 years... this isnt Phoenix there is a hockey base here that is just looking for a reason to support the team. I think the NHL is probably surprised that after being so inept for so long that we have the support we still do... can you imagine a competitive team...
