SABRES 0311 Posted yesterday at 02:44 AM Report Posted yesterday at 02:44 AM Right there is why the drop pass is dumb. Sabres do it so much that it’s ingrained and other teams know it. Quote

K012010 Posted yesterday at 02:46 AM Report Posted yesterday at 02:46 AM If you wanted to go super young with building your hockey dynasty you need to pick the right guys. They need to be like Benson, instead we continue to stack talented but soft and passive guys who actually need older vets as a presence to guide them. And we didn’t do that right  All I’m seeing is just a bunch of young kids who don’t have the right mentality for this level of hockey and don’t really have enough guys to guide them that would help that much anyway at this point. Cheering for a loser of a team but one that is giving it their all is way different than cheering for a loser of a team where it looks like they’re OK with a loss. I just think it’s hard for most of us to honestly comprehend how a professional athlete can have that demeanor, especially at that young of an age which most of our guys are. Anytime I ever played competitive sports I played with my hair on fire. I generally wasn’t the most athletic person on the field— I was up there, but there’s usually at least one or two special people who exist that you know we’re going on to do big things— but I never went down without swinging. I suspect that most of the people on this forum are the same way, and there’s this odd energy that had overtaken the team for most of this drought where it looks like they’re barely working up a sweat. It’s genuinely hard to compute that as we sit here and watch them, wishing we could be 22 years old with the $50 million contract getting out on the ice every night as a pro hockey player. What I’m wondering now is if one of the big variables that has destroyed this franchise is a lack of ability to vet a prospects personality versus their physical traits alone. I think whoever’s been in charge of that and the different people who have been have forgotten how important it is to understand the psychology and personality of a prospect. the only one that seems like they have it right of all the guys we’ve had in the last decade plus is Benson. He’s the only one that shows up every night with the energy and the attitude that we would expect out of a guy that age getting his pro shot. Have to believe they have top draft prospects tested and assessed for those attributes. Comes down to Desire. Think multi year big money contracts with guarantees given to these kids kill desire in all but the exceptional professional athletes. The NHL and player agents are killing the golden goose.  1 Quote

In the normal business world or corporate professional world, Benson would be labeled a self starter. as dumb of an analogy as this is perhaps, he’s the only one like that on this team of the young guys. Everyone else that they brought in that’s young is the type that gets into a group project and allows one person to do all the work and just coasts. 1 minute ago, Believer said: Have to believe they have top draft prospects tested and assessed for those attributes. Because other teams were in similar situations and managed to rebuild fairly quickly.  I guess my question is how are we not finding enough guys that have that desire? Quote

DarthEbriate Posted yesterday at 02:51 AM Report Posted yesterday at 02:51 AM The Isles just did a drop pass on their PP, but it started at the red line and the Sabres were all drifting back into their own zone anyway. It turned into a cakewalk easy entry. Quote
mjd1001 Posted yesterday at 02:53 AM Report Posted yesterday at 02:53 AM Tuch is 28 and has had 4 playoff runs and 66 (SIXTY SIX!) playoff games played. (Cup finals and 7th games) Zucker is almost 33, had been in the playoffs 9 different seasons with 52 games played. McLeod is 25, has played in 4 playoff seasons with 56 games played (Cup finals and 7th games) Greenway is almost 28 and has been in the playoffs 4 different times. Clifton is 29, 5 different years in the playoffs, a deep cup finals run and 44 career playoff games. Malenstyn and Kubel have been in the playoffs (Kubel with 30 career playoff games).  They have vets who have been through the playoffs. They have guys who have experienced the playoff runs. The younger guys (now not-so-young for many of them) need to produce. At this point 'youth' and 'lack of veterans' really isn't an excuse anymore.   1 1 Quote
