But then, yes, I would send Levi down to play a bunch. Sandstrom is also out, so you need a goalie for a good Amerks squad to hunt for their own playoffs. 2 Quote

LGR4GM Posted November 13 Report Posted November 13 At least not right away for Levi. I'd guess he'll start Thursday. Quote

Abe-Kubel is ready to get some ice, maybe they sit Quinn next game against St Louis? Quote

Quinn just lacks all effort. He needs a wake up call. Problem is Abe-Kubel is a 4th liner fringe player so you end up putting Krebs higher and that doesn't fix a whole lot. We're a good forward short. The much heralded 4th line hasn't really impressed me either. Quote

Ruff ran McLoed on the first line to day at practice. The center spline is weak without Thompson. The spare forward is Abe-Kubel unless they bring Kulich back and make another roster move. Quote

So if Thompson's out there actually is no spare forward. They can run with 7 D but otherwise it's Abe-Kubel onto the 4th line, Lafferty over to center, Krebs up to the 3rd and McLeod up to the first. Quinn gets to play no matter how much he sucks. Yay. 1 Quote

Hadn’t thought of 7D. Joker could come back or Abe-Kubel, Lindy has that option. It will be interesting to see who steps up, if anybody. 1 Quote

GASabresIUFAN Posted November 14 Report Posted November 14 Shouldn’t the thread title be updated to reflect the Sabres claiming Reimer? 1 Quote

And ive heard rumors about trading Cozens for help on D. I cant imagine how weak we'd look if that happened. But If Thompson is out for awhile i'd assume Kulich comes back but who knows. 1 1 Quote

It's not ideal but if you don't have any decent forwards to sub in........... Personally I think it only works if you have a bruising D man who you can throw onto the 4th line wing for some shifts. There was probably a more recent example of a Sabres D man playing wing but the last time I remember that clearly was when that D man was named.................wait for it.................Lindy Ruff. 1 Quote

Well if your best lineup is 7D then it’s worth considering. You look at your bottom D and your bottom F and decide which player brings more. Then you have to be willing to shuffle lines to accommodate the imbalance. It not ideal. I’m not advocating for it. 1 Quote

I remember Lindy playing wing, but does anyone remember Marc-André Gragnani, a borderline NHL defenseman who got called up from Rochester a few times in the early 2000s playing some wing? I do, and was able to confirm it on Wikipedia: "He played minor hockey for the Dauphins de Deux-Rives followed by four years in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He was selected 87th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and signed a professional contract with the Sabres in June 2007. After completing his junior career with the PEI Rocket, Gragnani began his professional career within the Sabres organization in the 2007–08 season, making his debut on February 23, 2008. Although originally drafted as a defenceman, Gragnani shifted to the left wing position during his first season.[1] " ( "Sabres call up Gragnani". wgr550.com. February 23, 2008. If not he doesn't qualify 🙂 I'm thinking Val James might have been a D man who played wing as well but I'm not sure. I think Lee Fogolin had some wing time as well, much like Lindy was used. Lindy was actually a pretty bad D man when he started, which is why he was put on the wing to hit people as he had a lot of raw skill and size. Quote

Did Nic Deslauriers complete his conversion from D to LW before entering the Buffalo org? Wasn't he a D-man originally? I know it's not the same thing, exactly, but he immediately popped into my head. **Wikipedia page confirms that the LA organization first experimented with the LW transition in preseason, but it wasn't until Buffalo brought him in via trade later that season and then spent an entire offseason program preparing (and losing a bunch of weight apparently) that he made the full-time switch to forward. Good one. I think you are right about DesLauriers. Quote

When you are short of centers, you can double shift one of the 3 other centers and maybe help a depth line add some scoring? The 7th D also allows a coach to spread out the minutes early in the game so his top horses are fresher late. Quote

Yes, Marc-André Gragnani played both D and wing for the Sabres. I'm pretty sure he started as a defenseman, they experimented with him on the wing, but I think that he ultimately went back to defense. I remember him being a tall, lean guy, along the lines of a Dylan Cozens, and had some decent offensive ability for a defenseman and maybe they thought he could be a "power forward" type of guy. In the end, he was one of those fringe AHL/NHL guys that got a fair number of callups and opportunities, but was never able to carve out a full-time role in the NHL. I think he was one of the parade of defensemen that got called up and injured in that semi-final series against Carolina in 2006, which was the last time the Sabres had very realistic shot at winning the Cup. 1 Quote
