  • LabattBlue changed the title to OT - Tragic story, woman takes two children over Niagara Falls

Very tragic.

The Falls unfortunately is a huge lure to those wishing to pass beyond this life in a dramatic way.  May those 2 children RIP and may their mother finally have the solace she apparently couldn't find in this life.

Back in the mid-80's during a noon news broadcast Channel 2 was covering some sort of flower festival by the Falls.  About a minute into the broadcast you see a short older man run into the river.  His head bopped up a couple of times and then he went under the water.  A few seconds later there were a pair of feet popping out of the water as he went over.  Don't remember the reporter, but will never forget seeing the guy's legs pop back up out of the water.

Mental illness sucks.

Very sad. I read that the mother was a domestic violence counselor. I am sure that type of work can be quite rewarding but also very stressful and depressing. Considering she took two children with her though, Taro T is probably right, mental illness was likely a factor here.

People taking their lives this way happens much more frequently than the public/media is aware of.   Very sad kids were involved.  I hate reading the news because of things of this nature.

And it’s covered in the media much more than ever.  The rate of suicide and mental illness seems so much higher now than ever before.   I wonder if it really is, but it sure seems to be?

Sad story.

People are stressed with life these days.  Often they see no other way out.  Not to downplay the tragic nature of mental illness, but that is not always a factor.  Was there a husband / significant other in the family dynamic?  Maybe the last thing that was piled on was a partner that left the family?

Very sad and tragic story.

It's really sad especially knowing some people even close to me who would love to have children but can't on their own and are having a hard time going through the process yet the woman who clearly shoudn't have been a mother unfortunately did this to hers. My heart breaks for those kids who had to be terrified and didn't have a choice, really heart breaking.

I saw someone go over in person. He walked right up to the water, threw his wallet on the ground, jumped in, floated by us and went over.  It was January and really cold, 5 degrees Fahrenheit. We were there taking pictures and walking back with our cameras full. I was high as balls and had to go to the park police and fill out a report and everything. Sucked. They said it happens about 30 times a year, we just don’t hear about it.

Was later told that a couple of weeks earlier, he had been picked up on the Thruway riding the rear bumper of his wife’s station wagon at 70. Guess he wanted to go.
