Idemo Buffalo
https://x.com/LLysowski/status/1850159688974754007 Lance Lysowski on X: "We started a hockey podcast at @TheBuffaloNews Coming soon to Apple and Spotify. @ByMHarrington and I discussed the state of the Sabres, how they can become a consistent team and more: https://t.co/yoyM2vxD8i https://t.co/TvSupjYoHS" / X Interesting. These two know their stuff and have some interesting opinions. I love the Sabres Live guys, and some other hockey podcasts, but these guys do a good job of critiquing the Sabres when needed. Porous Five Hole
I guess that must mean the Maintenance Day podcast with Lance & Joe Yerdon is dead. I listened to it from time to time and it was decent. For me, Lance is hard to listen to. He talks out of his nose and sounds whiny at the same time. Not a voice for radio/podcasting. Harrington is surprisingly good conversationally as a guest on podcasts, but he is a blowhard with antiquated takes and no sources.

I liked maintenance day, but I don't like Lance enough to listen to Harrington. Sad to hear this news.
Idemo Buffalo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5IhiQQge6g The podcast is on youtube. It is actually quite good. Makes some good points about the toll the European trip took on Sabres and how the Devils didn't have the same problem of having been on the road trip in Europe for so long. The podcast has "good pace" just like the Sabres.

These guys have good access to the coach, front-office, and players. Not sure about the owner, but if the Sabres keep playing well I will not be shocked if Terry Pegula jumped on their podcast.

Not interested in the opinion of a guy who kept the two professional sports team in Buffalo, or the guy who has the Bills in the playoffs every year, or the guy who is building a new stadium and is upgrading the arena? The Sabres and Bills have now combined for 7 straight winning seasons. The Bills did not make the playoffs for 17 straight years and now they have won 4 AFC East titles in a row. There is no reason to think the Sabres won't start being an Atlantic powerhouse that makes the playoffs every year. They are young, have a ton of talent, and finally found a coach. Future is very bright. 1 1

The Sabres finally found a coach? He found the guy that he fired. The future might be bright as long as Terry stays far away from Hockey Operations. If he shows up on a podcast, please ask him when the Sabres can spend to the cap. The teams lack of resources are certainly on him. 2

So I will say that is 7 straight, but definitely not ZERO. B. The Taxpayers are paying for $850M of the Stadium. As the governor said, they state gets back substantially more over the 30 year period, just in taxes on salaries. That doesn't include all the hotels, restaurants, construction, etc jobs. C. He found a guy who has taken team to the Stanley Cup finals and the playoffs, multiple times. D. The Sabres have only $8M available under the cap and are young. The roster/cap is very well constructed for a young team with players that are going to need to be paid at some point.

The Bills are good thanks to McDermott and Beane and are not part of the discussion. The Sabres have had one season over .500 and still failed to make the playoffs. That is not a winning season in anybody's book but yours. I stick with ZERO winning seasons since the drought that Pegula created. B. The state of New York and Erie County will pay $850 million, with $600 million from New York and $250 million from Erie County. This is the largest taxpayer contribution ever for an NFL facility. The state might eventually recover some of it, depending on inflation and other factors (time value of money). Pegula certainly has the money to pay for the stadium, but he didn't "drill another well". C. He fired the hockey coach who led them to ONE Stanley Cup final, under a prior owner and GM, and then he came groveling back to him because he is incapable of conducting an effective job search for the Sabres. D. The Sabres are under the cap again. In yet another pivotal "must win" season. We shall see how it works out. I was thinking playoffs too. Yes, technically, the Sabres were over .500 in 22-23 and I stand corrected - but playoffs is what I consider the minimum for a successful season. You clearly have reading comprehension issues if you think I want this team to leave Buffalo. I care deeply for the team and would hate seeing them leave. I am on record on that. I am not an apologist for the poor leadership that has plagued this franchise since Terry took over. If you are happy with the past 13 years so be it. Brawndo
A few things. Tom Golisano has repeatedly said the Sabres were not for sale when Pegula approached him about purchasing them. It is also well documented that there is a non relocation clause contained in the sale contract. Tim Graham was the reporter who had the best sources during the Bills Sale Process, reported that any potential buyer who was interested in moving the franchise out of WNY was politely told that was not going to happen. Tom Golisano was asked about his interest purchasing the Bills and his response was I will step in if was no other option to keep the team in Buffalo, the very reason he purchased the Sabres in the first place. There have been multiple articles on how there is little to no benefit to public funding of sports stadiums to taxpayers. This is a necessary evil for small markets if they want pro sports franchises. That being said let’s not micturate on taxpayers leg and tell them it’s raining. Although I do fully expect the building of a smaller version of Patriots Place on the site of the current ECC South Campus, let’s be real. The current stadium opened 50 years ago and there has been almost zero development in the surrounding area. In terms of the team being young as a reason for not spending more towards the cap, they were even younger after the 2022-23 season when the missed the playoffs by one point. Since then there two full off-seasons when they have not spend anywhere near the cap. Expected Buffalo, Matthew Fairburn from the Athletic and Joe Marino have all put together realistic contracts for the Sabres pending RFAs this summer, which would leave them ample cap space moving forward. This doesn’t even include the possibility of the cap rising even more than 4 million next season. Besides the most competitive teams in the league are very creative and have little trouble managing the salary cap.
