Word to the wise: when the doctor says "digital exam", they mean their finger, not a digital photograph. Once they complete that exam and confirm the reduced flow isn't from anything cancerous, you have the choice as to whether or not you want to go on something like flomax, or try the all natural route. I opted for saw palmetto and stinging nettle leaf tea, after hearing that flomax has some pretty intense side effects. I would say at this point my PP is 90% better, so stick with it! Also, great thread OP: with another season looking to be lost already, focusing on the health of our prostates is likely to be a more rewarding, and possibly even enjoyable, journey than the one we were likely to have following Sabres hockey. Anyone else have any good tips or advice? Or you can opt for a TURP procedure. Ironically, watching this power play feels about the same as one without anasthesia 😜 For those who don't know what a TURP is (Trans Urethral resection of prostate) they roto-root your prostate through your tip.... So yeah, about the same as the sabres attempting a zone entrance Edited October 20 by Wyldnwoody44 1 Quote
GASabresIUFAN Posted October 20 Author Report Posted October 20 0-21 and counting. When will they actually try to fix this mess? Quote
Pimlach Posted October 20 Report Posted October 20 Many good comments here on things that can be done. It comes down to more and better movement. Not just staying stationary and moving the puck on the perimeter, but player movement as well. They tend to stand around too much. 1 Quote

Ducks are right on our tail. 0-17 for the year. If the Sabres want to be the worst PP in the NHL they better get to work losing face offs, sloppy drop passes, stay away from the front of the net and miss the net on the slap shots, that should keep you where you are. I'd take Dahlin off PP1 for a bit. Reduce his minutes to protect the injury (and he should be wearing a non-contact jersey in practice so that Krebs doesn't bump/run him needlessly). I'd try Joker on PP1 -- not that he's great at it, he has shown the ability to get point shots past the forward. Make quick passes and get the puck to the net. Don't worry about a TNT one-timer, just go get a messy goal that pinballs around a bit. Quote

He has pretty good hands, I'm not sure his hands are good enough to get you a bunch of power Play goals but I'm all for it. Benson? It might be more of an issue of physics compared to willpower. Maybe he'd be willing to do it, but when you're only 5 ft. 10 in tall and barely 170 lb... No matter how hard you try, you're just not going to be able to hold your position in front of the net or even provide a screen when you have defenseman who are 4 to 5 in taller than you and 50 lb. Heavier than you whose only job is to cross-check you and get you out of there. 🤣🤣 Benson would do it. I don't know it'd be successful but dude has the mindset where he'd stand there, calloused mid back, trying to make it happen. Sad when the literal kid is one of the only dudes like that. Pretty sure that's why we got the Skinners of the world out the locker room. Get the negative, career loser, away from the young guts. A half decade being coached by the least firey, content, meh, permanently puts a stank on guys. Our roster is too young to turn upside down. Gimme 2 years ago a scoring, and last years goal tending and were a contender. Add some defense, I think we're allowed to do that (???), and were really dangerous. God i need them to have a good year Quote

mjd1001 Posted October 23 Report Posted October 23 (edited) They only had one single powerplay tonight where they didn't score. If you look at it that way, its progress...right? RIGHT??? (Lindy's post game press conference, said he liked the PP tonight and was pretty sure they would get one by the end of the year....at least he has a sense of humor about it) Edited October 23 by mjd1001 2 Quote
PromoTheRobot Posted October 23 Report Posted October 23 I wouldn't mind going 0-fer the season of we average 4.5 goals/game and don't give up any shorties. Quote

Tage had several looks, as did others. I thought for sure we were gonna score. Little bit bad luck, Oettinger is an outstanding goalie and Dallas is killed it at the faceoff circle. Sabres are better then last season but still pretty poor at faceoffs but tonight only 38%. 1 Quote
GASabresIUFAN Posted October 23 Author Report Posted October 23 So we are congratulating the PP for not completely sucking for a change but still not scoring. Wow! Last I looked this is a results oriented business. No excuses. For a team that is clearly finding their game 5 on 5 to not score on the PP is a coaching problem. Quote

Last I looked this is a results oriented business. No excuses. For a team that is clearly finding their game 5 on 5 to not score on the PP is a coaching problem. I'd like to see where the issues are statistically. Its kinda hard for me to find stats about how many shots as a team they are taking on the PP, are those 'quality chances', how those compare to what they have done in the past and compare to league averages. The only thing I could find is their 'zone time'. When on the PP, they get the puck out of their zone quickly (low zone time compared to league average). But they don't control it in the opposing zone as much as most teams. They seem to spend a LOT of time in the Neutral zone with the puck on the PP. (league average is 14% of time on the PP in the neutral zone, Sabres are just over 16% in the neutral zone...it may not seem like much but that puts them near the top of the league with the puck being between the blue lines of all PPs.) Quote
mjd1001 Posted October 23 Report Posted October 23 (edited) Another thought...maybe its simply the zone entries that need to be fixed and then "wait for the luck to happen". Why do I say that? I'm off from work so I decided to look at all the games last night and watch the replays of some of the PP goals scored. I just watched 6 goals (randomly) and 1 of them was a short pass on the stick to someone that made a great shot. The other 5? 2 deflections (the ugly random type), one funny bounce of the boards to a guy that happened to be where the puck came from, and loose puck off the faceoff that was just sitting there that only one guy saw and he picked up it and shot it, and one absolutely awful play by the Canadians that let the Rangers have a 3-on-2 entry with bad coverage. So, it seems to me, in that small sample size, that teams have gotten pretty good at defending when down by one man. You aren't going to really work any magic with the puck when you are on the PP to score more goals. The key is to GET control of the puck in the offensive zone, and the moment you have a chance to take a shot, just take it. You'll get a goal more often because of a funny bounce, a random tip-in, a deflection in front of a screen...those things seem to be a lot more common than just wizardry with the puck by your team. So what do the Sabres need to do? Just get the puck into the zone with possession, put a body in front of the net (not skating back and forth, have someone Stand there and take a beating) and get shots to the net and hope for a bounce. I might look at more replays of other goals, but it seems like 75% of the time, that is really it. Dahlin at full strength, being able to move back and forth at the blueline and dangle guys who try to pressure him....him getting that ability back will help a LOT. Edited October 23 by mjd1001 Quote
GASabresIUFAN Posted October 26 Author Report Posted October 26 I think I now understand the issues with the PP. They just make bad decisions with the puck. I counted 5 before the shortie. They had 3 opportunities to get the puck deep in the zone and didn’t. They actually make better decisions when they just play naturally instead in a half court type offense on the PP. 1 Quote
Alaska John Posted October 26 Report Posted October 26 Great news today. The Sabres didn't get outscored on their own power plays. They finally scored a PP goal, but then gave up a shortie, so it comes out to even. Which is better than they've done in some other games this year. But, kvetching aside, when I checked the standings today, the Sabres were in second place in their division and in a playoff spot. This with a 4-4-1 record. I don't think playing .500 hockey will be good enough to make the playoffs, but it was so nice to see them that high in the standings. And the Sabres have a three game win streak. Whoo-hoo! Quote

Whoo-hoo! .500 won't make the playoffs because they are listing the standing in terms of pure points, but the season ends with every team playing the same number of games. Points per game (how the season ends) has them tied with Detroit and Toronto for 4th in the division, and a 4 way tie with those 3 teams plus Columbus for 9th-12th in the conference. So when you look at it that way, they are still looking up at a wild card spot to New Jersey (currently 8th in the conference with .545 points, sabres at .500) Of course, in recent years have they started poorlyand we just wanted them to be realistically within a few points of the playoffs, or in a spot, by Thanksgiving. If they keep playing well, they should be in that position. Quote
