Sure, but you don't have to draft one yourself, you can trade with a team like Buffalo to get one.

And the Blues won in 2019 because they traded for a 2nd round picked C in ROR - they didn’t win because they had 5th overall Brayden Schenn on the roster

Do we have one player that would do this?  Krebs maybe?  It’s the level of intensity the Sabres need to bring in.  The current guys aren’t capable of it, find guys that are.

Was thinking the same when I watched the scrums during the Ottawa - Boston game. There was a passion and a hunger for winning that can't be found in the Sabres.

I watched Ottawa twice this weekend. Comeback win against Boston and a close win against NJ and they are currently where we wanted to be. Their roster was constructed differently but talent wise they do not have more than us. Different, but not more. Their D has certainly been constructed differently with more of a defensive focus. Ullmark is still injured and not playing. 

Boston game looked like a playoff game and was very entertaining. In both games the big difference I saw was a team that was giving it their all in every area. They wanted to win, they want the playoffs, that is obvious. I know they laid a dud and we beat them before but in these guys their effort level and intensity was way way beyond what the Sabres have been giving. That's the only real difference. 

If I had to bet now I'd say they make it over Detroit and Boston.

New Jersey I can't figure out.

I see no reason why they shouldn't be a 110+ point team if healthy like they were 2 seasons ago. Last year they were decimated by injuries and bad goaltending. This team, has the young guys who are 2 years better/more experienced than they were 2 years ago yet I'm a bit let down by their play.  They are on pace for 97 points..in most years that would be borderline wildcard only.

They have been virtually 100% healthy and are getting good goaltending on of it.

The there is the Toronto factor with them. They are traditionally the exact type of team that gives Toronto fits in the regular season...young, fast, hard skating. Yet Every time Toronto plays them, they seem to handle NJ pretty well.

NJ is one of the teams I really can't figure out there most.

I haven't seen enough of them to say definitively but today they resembled the Sabres. Fast and all offense and good in open ice but really soft when it got physical. I don't think they will do well in the playoffs.

We haven't since Eichel left, though he wasn't that great at it.

Sorry but Jack wasn’t that guy either.  The Sabres haven’t drafted anyone with a heart beat since Zadorov?   Just a bunch of wayward bean poles looking for a hero when confronted with adversity on the ice. We need a hero, he’s gotta be sure and it’s gotta be soon and he’s gotta be larger than life.  Sorry, I digress.

NJ can’t score. They have Hughes and Hishier and Bratt but don’t get much from anyone else. Meier has been a disappointment for them and Mercer’s offensive game hasn’t developed. They need more options up front.

So then it was the league's way of saying we have to suspend you 3 games but it's not really 3 games. Your team will be fine for at least one of them.

I think Risto got a few games now and then. Dahlin has gotten some games.

Nice. Skinner revenge game? Or… is it more likely that he just pulls a standard Skinner bottom 6 effort? 2 shots on goal, 0 credited PIM or hits, -1.

Bruins definitely looked like a team on the way out tonight and Columbus looked like what we wish the Sabres were.

The best we can hope for is if Jarmo would like to come (and put up with Terry). That said, he was the BJs GM for 11 years. And it took this long to see success. Maybe he learned something over the years.

Jarmo drafted well, and he did get the needed defensmen by trade and signed (where we failed), and even if I concider the Severson- deal horrible, he did what it takes. Where he failed badly was when he hired the coaches.

He made a lot of mistakes along the way. I guess you could argue he now has the experience and maybe if you give Adams 5 more years he will be an experienced GM too 🙂

Columbus looks like they have drafted well over the last 5 or so years but the difference would be roster construction. They have a more diverse array of types of players and thus they have a more complete roster. Not to mention a guy like Olivier who I would argue we have needed, because he allows the youth to play bigger and braver. Helps with team development and in the locker room. 

Let's not forget they are doing it despite losing their star veteran forward as well.
