UFA Defenseman Mark Giordano Talking to Sabres per His Agent

Giordano’s goal is to pursue a Stanley Cup this season, but jumping on with a team like the Flames, which seems unlikely, or the Sabres, could be the first step towards that.

“In Buffalo, who we’re talking to, they’ve got young kids who could benefit. They’re a little worried with his pedigree, will he be happy with the ice time, will he be happy if he’s a part-time player,” Winter stated. “Ultimately, Gio has to make a decision as to what will help him accomplish his goals.”

While the preference is to sign on with a contending team right out of the gate, according to Winter, the veteran blueliner is open to joining a rebuilding club as a mentor with the notion of being moved to a Stanley Cup contender ahead of the trade deadline.” lol

Yeah, the perception is still that we’re a joke.

So what’s the plan?  Sign Giordano, trade Joki and Krebs plus a pick for Kadri?  I don’t know if it would work, but it would at least look like a franchise in win now mode.

Actually he is using the Sabres to get a bigger contract with a Swiss team to play with Zadina.

Dahlin, Byram, Power, Samuelsson, Joki and Clifton are in a blueline group. I don't see him as a top D player on our team unless one of them is moved out.

I'd pass, unless here is here as an insurance policy or a #7/8 guy.  I didn't exactly analyze his play last year, but watching a lot of Leaf games when he was out there, he seemed like he was shot. Like, slow to move, slow to react, shouldn't be in the NHL level.

Earlier in the year and in very small sample sizes, with low ice time and against 'lesser' lines on the other teams he played decent, but put him out there in any other circumstance and he looked like he was in slow motion.

Pretty interesting that his agent is openly naming the teams that are possibilities.

Also a sign that the Sabres aren't quite as toxic a destination as some may think.  Giordano is probably spent, but he's credible and has had a great career.

Since Winter mentioned the Sabres I highly doubt it happens 

He did have some good metrics last season in limited minutes

You don't gain respect around the league by trading ready-to-retire 13th forwards and 7th defensemen to Cup contenders at the deadline.

You gain respect around the league by being in the playoffs.

The Sabres name being dropped is almost certainly as a lever elsewhere.

Giordano might be a good “coach” for our young guys, but he’s not good enough to play in our starting 6. Looks like another Erik Johnson and would probably be as helpful.

Any player signing here this season to collect a pay cheque while plotting a move elsewhere can go ***** himself. Any GM happily signing such a player can do the same.

Do you really think that's it (not toxic) or is it because he's from Toronto and he wouldn't have to move. Also yes, I'm sure he's thinking he could be deadline flipped and even if we weren't a "joke" and were in the running for the playoffs we could still flip him if we wanted to and let a younger guy play. 

bringing him in would be strange, but he is a veteran leader with a good work ethic.

I honestly hope the team that spent all off season and really since the Mitts trade, bitching about playing faster and being faster signs Giordano. I just really need that last nail in the coffin of, "we have no plan and are full of *****".

If the defense still need that "coach" and "experience" and the team still needs a "name" then don't talk to me about playoffs.

Hell no.  Let the Sabres just agree to have their name put out there to help him sign somewhere else.

Pass.   The Sabres are not a Cup contender.  This is like a Taylor Hall, Eric Staal, and Erik Johnson acquisition all over again.  
 

Having rental vets will not improve the team leadership.  The players that we have need to step up.

He appears only willing to consider the Sabres as a stepping stone to an end of season trade.  That isn’t even a back handed compliment.  That’s a guy willing to do anything to remain in the league one more season. While it isn’t evidence of toxicity, it surely is evidence of desperation.

To be fair, the agent saying he’s talking to the Sabres could very easily mean he made the “hey are you interested” phone call and they said no. Never trust the words of a lawyer.

This leadership thing is getting out of control. Rasmus Dahlin has been our starting Dman since 2018. Muel/Joker and Byram have all been doing this for awhile and Byram won a Stanley Cup. We don’t need more leadership we need the players we do have to play the way we know and have seen they can. Giordano adds nothing but an old ass body to this team who just got a lot faster.
