I think he is an all around forward who can do what his team needs him to do.

This is a long article, but really well done.  This kid is a driver of offense and responsible on defense.

Ya Winnipeg is sort of like buffalo and Rochester combined, very suburby. Winnipeg is like 3 times as big as buffalo proper before you add in the whole buffalo surrounding area

He's got 17 assists in his past 31 games as an AHL rookie. Looks pretty good to me?

But this is the 2nd year in a row his goals and assists line up after having a more traditional ratio before that.

https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/535699/noah-Östlund

He does have a good shot, and apparently has been encouraged to use it more.

He's been the playmaker and driver of his line every time I've seen him.

Damn, that’s too bad

- - -

we don’t need an “all around” forward. We don’t need a jack of all trades forward, we don’t need a “toolsy” player who can “slot up and down the lineup”

we need a playmaker, full stop. I do not care about his shot. I do not need him to utilize his shot more.

what do the buffalo sabres think they have figured out? Are they hanging their banner on shooting percentage now? Is that the thing? Every forward we add to the mix can shoot. We get it. We shoot the lights out and no one wracks up any assists and the operation lets us down when we need it the most and on the power play. The sabres have figured out a way to make 5v5 goals for *utterly* non predictive. Build a better forward unit.

We need drivers of offense.  Östlund is that kind of player.  If we stick him with guy like TNT and Norris, he'll be their playmaker.  He's kind of a smaller version of Tuch, but I'd argue a little more pass first.  In his draft year when Noah played with shoot first players like fellow 1st rd forwards Lekkerimaki and Ohgren, Östlund lead that team in assists with 33 (only 9 goals).

I've never been to Winnipeg so this sort of interested me. I googled it and it's 179 sq miles vs. 52.5 sq miles, so 3.4x larger from a city-proper size perspective. Winnipeg has more geographic size than Denver (155) where I live but less than Phoenix (518) which struck me as just massive when I last visited.

As down as I get on a lot of what is going on with the Buffalo Sabres, so excited to see what Östlund can do once he arrives. Sabres need to keep developing him like this and do NOT screw this up, we might have a gem here.

Definitely agree here. Loved seeing them add that pure playmaker to the system in Östlund. Krebs, Östlund do look like the two forwards in system who best fit the “pure playmaker” description.

Quinn, Cozens, Savoie, Kulich, Peterka, Mittelstadt.. all these guys seem to have pretty balanced pass-to-shoot preferences. (Though if Savoie really does become the next Briere, he’d lean “pass”)

I suppose on roster, Tuch is a guy who is pass-first. Looking at the roster/system, outside Skinner we don’t seem to have a ton of “shoot first, sniper” type players, either. Kisakov, Poltapov, Rosen? Not that familiar with them.

Really, the Sabres definitely seem focused on acquiring forwards with balance. Seems to be the name of the game, that versatility. Quinn being the poster child. He seems to both shoot and pass equally well.

Eye roll all you want, I’m not just ranting or moving goalposts I’ve been talking about this for years. As seen in 2022.

the relevant prism right now is building an actual team and the standings results therein. Simply adding talent isn’t the aim anymore, nay, it’s actively harmful if we aren’t adding with regard to the grander context. The proof is in the pudding: we aren’t getting any better drafting high and adding these guys to the lineup. Adams plan failed. Past tense.

I can be disappointed the organization appears to potentially be forging him into a more shoot first player, rather than actively having him work on harnessing and developing his stand out skill, one we DESPERATELY need on roster. I’m sorry, does this team have a stellar developmental record? Is the roster not lacking in the area im talking about, suggesting they may have a type? I feel discussion on this is warranted given the documented statistical change in his results the past 2 seasons

Hell, half the GDTs are full of “I just want the team to be entertaining.” I’ve said a million times i like the playmaking style. Instead we add Josh Norris. Worst primary assist rate among top 6 players in the nhl

Jury is out on Östlund but the statistical trend bears inspection

I thought the guy they drafted 1st last year looked best handling the puck? Which they need on the pp.

How far away is he from being NHL ready? One, two years?

Before we get ahead of ourselves, remember that Quinn dominated in the AHL... Like really dominated. Where is he now?

We don't need to keep being the youngest team in the league. He's so far from being able to contribute... If he ever does.

It's way easier said than done, but let's use him as part of a package to get a legit top 6 F or top 4 D. Let's see who can't afford to sign all their vets this summer and make a deal.

You trust Adams to make a trade that he wins and gets the best player in the deal? I have some ocean front property in Oklahoma to sell you.

I loath Adams as a GM, but...... McLeod for Savoie is working out so far.  (Please don't shoot the messenger).

One more year in the A for sure, but then after that I can see him challenging for an NHL roster spot.
