GASabresIUFAN Posted July 5 Report Posted July 5 I’m just glad he didn’t give him a multi-year deal. That leaves the door open for Johnson and Novikov next season and/or to upgrade him in-season. Just now, #freejame said: Seems like a lot. Q offer was 2.6 and it’s about what the projections said he’d get. Quote
dudacek Posted July 5 Report Posted July 5 Value feels about right. Flexibility for both sides 3 Quote
Billznut Posted July 5 Report Posted July 5 (edited) Would have rather packaged Joki as part of a larger trade, but happy it’s for just 1 year, slight overpay, but we have the cap room to comfortably deal with it as it’s just one more year. Joki could be moved at the deadline if we are sellers this year. Edited July 5 by Billznut 1 Quote

RochesterExpat Posted July 5 Report Posted July 5 Like Zucker, we overpaid, but it’s for one year so the net impact is minimal as it’s just opportunity cost and it isn’t like we’re spending to the cap anyway. 1 Quote

nfreeman Posted July 5 Report Posted July 5 This is kinda strange -- Joki will be a UFA after next season, so, they've effectively escorted him to UFA and given up control over the asset. 2 Quote

I think when they traded for Byram ^^^ was inevitable. They can trade him to a team that wants to extend him now, trade him as a rental at the deadline, or ride him into the playoffs. But there’s no way they can afford to keep him by paying term. 2 1 Quote

I think you're right about Byram and the impact on the likelihood of keeping Joki -- although this increases the pressure on KA to keep Byram. As for Joki, I think he'd be more attractive as a trade asset with at least another year under contract though, innit? I suppose that might've cost over $4MM per year though, and they weren't sure how attractive he'd be at that price. Still, it kinda seems like they're just letting a pretty solid asset go for nothing here. Quote
thewookie1 Posted July 5 Report Posted July 5 He may still get traded, this assures any other team he won’t file for arbitration Quote

That's prolly why they overpaid: made the obvious circumstance worth agreeing to for Joki. Quote

GoPuckYourself Posted July 5 Report Posted July 5 Man if we can upgrade Jokiharju that would be ideal. 1 Quote

PerreaultForever Posted July 6 Report Posted July 6 Overpay but it's only for a year so he can either show he is worthy of that or get flipped at the deadline (with retention most likely) or if we are actually in it be replaced at the deadline and/or he doesn't really block Johnson IF Johnson earns the spot full time for the season after. Porous Five Hole Posted July 6 Report Posted July 6 Folks here predicted a long term deal with Henri for over 4MM AAV. This deal hits just right. They’ll use him for his handedness, and move on when it is time to pay better players. Time for Byrum to step up. Nice signing to lead into that. Quote
Thorner Posted July 6 Report Posted July 6 (edited) Something very satisfying about this, too. One year. UFA at the end. Guess what? He’s still on the team. He still counts. The year exists, we aren’t “renting” it. Edited July 6 by Thorny 2 1 Quote
WhenWillItEnd66 Posted July 6 Report Posted July 6 This one I thought weird. He was definitely the one I thought they would trade. They still can but I think we are sticking with our defense from last year Quote
TageMVP Posted July 6 Report Posted July 6 Shouldn't have re-signed him. He's someone I've been wanting off the team for a while 3 million dollars? For what? He just got paid one million for each goal scored. Get him outta here 1 Quote
