I don’t care what they did in Juniors. It is irrelevant. Kulich might make the team as a winger if they don’t replace Skinner. Maybe. This was supposed to be a season the put out a tough and competitive playoff team. Both played on the same Team in 2022-23. Savoie was the Center and Benson Winger. Patrick said they were the best Tandem he has seen. Wasn't just a couple games, 34. Quote

Using buffalohockeybeat? Benson and Savoie played WHL Juniors together, that is not in the minors, not ever. Benson is still 19 and is not eligible for minors (pro). Learn what these terms mean. If Savoie is ready to be the 3C in the NHL right now I will be happy. Based on his limited action last season it is a stretch to think that. But maybe we can count on good luck. Most people see him as a winger. Edited July 3 by Pimlach 1 Quote
tom webster Posted July 3 Report Posted July 3 I don't know what has been said in this thread but as I have said before, some of you need to worry more about what he does/doesn't do and less about what he says. Two years ago or so, he went on and on about being happy with his goaltending despite completing negotiations for both Matt Murray and John Gibson that only fell through because the players wouldn't waive. This year he had deals in place for Necas and Ehlers but in both cases the players wouldn't commit to extensions and he thought the price was too high without the extensions. You can argue about his negotiation skills, about how well he presents his message, about the contracts offered but he knows what this team needs. He just doesn't seem to know or have the ability to get the job done. It also wouldn't surprise me if he thinks Winnipeg or Carolina would be fooled by his message to the fans. 4 5 Quote

I agree about observing what he does versus listening to what he says. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to be a great closer. But that is also an organizational effort and not just the GM. No one in the organization seems to know what levers to pull and when. It's concerning. Quote
nfreeman Posted July 3 Report Posted July 3 Good stuff @tom webster. I don't think it's necessarily fair to criticize KA for not being able to convince Ehlers or Necas to sign extensions, if that's what some posters here are inclined to do. Those guys are 1 year from UFA -- they aren't going to give that up to sign extensions in NHL Siberia. Then the question becomes how much are you prepared to give up for 1-year rentals who mentally have one foot out the door upon arrival and are likely to play that way all year. I'm not inclined to give up that much for that kind of player, but YMMV. 2 Quote

Maybe it's time for TP to find a experienced NHL GM with credibility with players and other GMs to run his team. If not, maybe it's time for TP to sell the team to someone who will bring in legit professionals. 2 Quote
triumph_communes Posted July 3 Report Posted July 3 (edited) Botterill couldn’t get anything done. Then he signed Skinner atrocity because he had no leverage after getting nothing done. Adams need to bite a bullet. Though pricey players without an extension aren’t what we should get. They’d help; but he can find it elsewhere. I get that casual fans want a top6 player, but all we need is a 3C vet Edited July 3 by triumph_communes 1 Quote

I'm not inclined to give up that much for that kind of player, but YMMV. If the GM didn't have a grasp on who the replacement players were going to be for the players he sent packing, then he was taking an unnecessary gamble. Mitts was traded and Skinner was bought out. Who is going to fill the void? It's inarguable that Skinner isn't well rounded enough for this staff, but when placed in the right situation he is an accomplished goal scorer. Why not keep him for another year? Mitts wanted to be here. The trade for Byram made sense and is a good trade if a Mitts replacement is brought in. Without an adequate replacement, it becomes in my view a net deficit. I'm not criticizing the GM for not willing to give up substantial assets for players such as Ehler or Necas without their agreeing to sign extensions. But that goes back to my original point that roster holes were created without a plan to satisfactorily fill them. This organization is spinning its wheels in the rut that it created. We're competing against teams that work hard to get better. The arithmetic is simple: When you take two steps forward, and then two steps back you have not moved forward. It just seems that this earnest GM doesn't have the ability to strategically think. It's tiresome to witness. 4 Quote

Getting a late 20’s player on an expiring contract is different than getting an overdone Eric Staal or even a Taylor Hall with a full NTC. This player should be motivated to have a good year and to showcase his skills in order to get one more big deal. Whether he re-signs with Buffalo, leaves at season’s end or is traded at the deadline will be determined over the course of the year. Relationships can be cultivated, team success can change perspectives or another failure can bring prospects. As discussed once or twice, KA has tons of picks and prospects to get a top seven player, who is preferably a C. 1 Quote

In the beginning, there were 4 lines. Then we had top 6, bottom 6. The concept of middle 6 emerged at some point. At one point, I recall seeing talk of the top 9. Is top 7 a thing now as well? And whodat? Is it that player who resides just outside the top 6 and is ready to move up the lineup when needed? If such a player were a centre, it would call to mind Derek Roy circa 2005-2007 (iirc, he centred the third line (that thing was deadly) but then would slide up to play wing with Drury?). Quote

I am tired of just saying 3C, wanted to change it up. Derek Roy is a good comparable to what I am looking for. If the guy is good enough to make Cozens 3C or move him to the wing, even better. A player that is closer to 4C will be useless filling in for TNT or Cozens in the case of injuries. Right now it seems like KA is penciling Krebs as 3C and most of us agree that is a big risk. Lafferty can play 4C but Krebs could learn even more from the new guys than he did from KO and Girgs. Lafferty, Aube-Kubel and Malenstyn never came into the league expected to score and be the new shiny toys. They embrace the opportunity to play on the 4th line and muck it up. Krebs can play bigger with guys like this. 1 Quote

It's an interesting question -- what's the right price for the Sabres to pay for a good, but not great, winger who is 1 year from UFA and who has refused to sign an extension as part of a trade? If the Sabres' 1st-round-equivalent assets are: Rosen Levi Ryan Johnson Östlund Savoie Helenius Kulich 2025 #1 ...how many of those are you prepared to give up for Necas or Ehlers, when both have already said no thanks to an extension? I'd have a hard time giving up more than 1, but YMMV. 1 Quote

There are plenty of fish in the sea who aren’t rentals or have NTC/NMC, that would allow him to better the roster. It’s his job to identify said players and pull the trigger. 5 Quote
