dudacek Posted June 18 Report Share Posted June 18 Not sure who caught Lindy’s recent lengthy Buffalo TV interview, but he pretty much said he wants to add somebody who can chuck ‘em. Not in so many words, but in response to a question about it, he acknowledged he’s a coach who likes to have “tools” and said a young team can use somebody who makes them feel brave. French Collection Posted June 18 Report Share Posted June 18 I agree that more toughness is needed. Watch what you wish for though, Leaf’s got a real tough guy in Reaves, but he can’t play hockey. If it was up to Lindy he would have an offensive zone face off specialist, a defensive zone specialist, dedicated penalty killers, a slot guy for the power play, etc., etc. Reality is that rosters are limited so you need to prioritize and settle. If you you're a Sabre who needs this, I hope Adams trades you yesterday. Fully fine with adding more grit and guys who can rough-house more. Interviewer asks what the priorities are over the next month, Lindy brings up toughness, interviewer follows up with question about tough guys, Lindy says it’s a tool he likes to have. (I usually get booed when I say that.) 😀 As you smartly point out, there is a big distinction between playing grittier/tougher and fighting. It's indisputable that this team needs to get grittier. In fact, if it is fast paced, high scoring game, I often don't like when 'one side' decides to start a fight to 'change the tone' if they can't keep up. With that said, if fighting is still a part of the league, them I'm good with them adding a guy who is pretty good at it. Both games are entertaining hockey to watch. Anyone who has watched top tier college hockey recognizes that it doesn't lack for physicality. Last year, Cozens instigated a fight to stir up his own players. He got his face smashed in, and he wasn't the same player for quite a while. It seems that most hockey fans enjoy it. I do not. It should be banned. My recommendation for hockey fans who like fighting is that they should go to boxing and MMA matches. Hockey hooliganism is outdated. I agree but I’ve also seen teammates get jazzed when someone on their team dropped the gloves. I think it’s a necessary evil that can get some extra motivation and emotion involved in the games. I believe you can but it takes a long time to develop it. Not to mention a cultural change. Ruff does have the stuff to make us tough, but will it be enough? I admitted at the time the hire was in large part an attempt to invigorate the fan base (a very successful one at that, I found it exciting), but…is..is that all there is to it? Today's game feels like watching an All-Star game... a bunch of skill guys buzzing around trying to out skate and dangle each other. Head-down? Doesn't matter... it takes zero courage or toughness to succeed as a professional hockey player, just make sure your parents pay enough for private lessons when you're playing youth hockey. Can't afford private lessons? Find another sport. The days of out hustling, out hitting, playing with reckless abandon to fill a role are gone. As a result, the game is now more popular with a different crowd... those who didn't like the aggressive nature of the sport and simply enjoy watching the speed and skill. And that's OK. It’s the only (non combat) sport where it’s essentially legal/tolerated/encouraged to..not play the game in question but rather to remove some of your equipment and assault eachother.
