To be fair, that’s points on 3 of the 4 oiler goals before game 4. And Gretzky had a much much better supporting cast than McDavid ever has. 6 other hall of famers on those oilers teams compared to McDavid only having Draisaitl.

I'm just tired of people comparing him to Gretzky when he hasn't even surpassed Crosby once he starts winning cups then it can start .

All he is right now is the greatest regular season player

Does any league’s fans spend more time tearing down their stars than the NHL?  Enjoy the show. These are really talented players performing at a level the league has never seen.

Nobody says that he is as good as Gretzky. But he is the closest thing in the modern league, which is why there are comparisons. McDavid at 27 has lead the league in scoring 5 times, and while he likely doesn’t catch Gretzky’s 11, he only needs 2 more to have second place, which he’s fairly likely to do. McDavid isn’t just a regular season player, leading the league in the postseason 2 of the last 3 seasons. But it takes a team to win a cup. Gretzky was great, but so were the teams he was on for the cup wins. If he could do it by himself, why didn’t he win one in his 12 seasons away from the Oilers? The Oilers still won a cup in 1990 without Gretzky.

Who would you take Prime Crosby or McDavid for the finals?

That's all that needs to be said

I’d take McDavid. Analytically, at 5 on 5, he slightly edges Crosby out straight up in the postseason, and when you take into account team relative analytics, McDavid is the more impactful player by a notable amount. On the Power play, McDavid has a bigger advantage, and on the PK they are both similar. McDavid also has already surpassed Crosby’s career PK time in the postseason. Put McDavid on those Penguins teams and the win at least the same amount of cups. Crosby on the Oilers would be at 0 still.

Crosby “looks” like a better playoff performer because he is probably the best grinder to ever play the game.  Noone could do the dirty work and collect points quite like Crosby.

McDavids game is much more speed and dangle.  It’s hard to directly compare the two, and McDavid’s cup runs are just really starting so it’s too early to say how he’ll be remembered playing the biggest games. But he surely has the talent and drive to be a major presence on that stage.

You clearly forgot who prime crosby was he blows McDavid out of the water defensively and it's not even close sure McDavid would outscore him but having Crosby 2 way game likely changes the series

Do you think Crosby on this Edmonton team makes a difference in the outcome?  I really don’t.

Crosby is a Selke level defensive player and McDavid stinks on D

i am the guy defending McDavid in the thread, too. He doesn’t / didn’t fold and he may be the most talented player to ever play the game

he’s got a ways to go to catch Sid in terms of greatness though, and Sid’s dominance 200 foot is a big part of what led to his accomplishments

Nah, Crosby is assuredly “that guy”

if he doesn’t make a difference no one does

Envy bread, yum.

(Much tastier than sour grapes, but maybe not as good as having YOUR cake (especially when one gets to eat it too).)  😜

Young Crosby and Vet Crosby are great, early 2010’s Crosby was a drama queen with a penchant for injuries and being goaded into stupidity between whistles. Then around 2014 he seemed to have a Eureka moment and figured out that he doesn’t need to fight Flyers players; just go through them and score.

His defense game was something else back in his prime days if McDavid had his instincts they would easily won the series

Florida typically starts a game slow. It's a matter of whether they can pick it up faster than the other team seizes the momentum.
