McDavid scoring 42 points is more unprecedented (3 times before this year) than a player from a losing team winning the Conn Smythe (it’s happened 5 times before today). It would have been a far bigger blunder to not reward his playoffs, in a historic sense

Only the 2nd time a skater from the losing squad won.

And when Leach did it, pretty sure he set a goal scoring record.

Welp with him not showing up its a afterthought the NHL will make sure to try there best to never mention it again because they got embarrassed.

A player who doesn’t lead their team to the championship is not the most valuable player. They could have lost with or without him. But Florida would not have won without the playoff performance Bobrovsky had.

Reality disagrees. Connor’s name is on the trophy.

its not an award for “player you couldn’t have won without”. Multiple fit that criteria every year. You are literally just inventing your own criteria because you are unable to cope with the actual terms of the award

by all means, you and the other one can continue dealing me your eye rolls and vomiting emojis because you are in your feels and want to kick and stomp your feet about it

And good for E-Rod.

Pretty sure Billy Smith did that all the time.  Never shook hands after the last game and wanted to do his celebrating with his teammates in the dressing room.

Was referencing the half empty arena as the celebration wore on.

I would encourage the players to skate right to the glass. Share it with the fans. Get close enough for them to see the names. Make it a party.

Agree. Always thought it would be cool to pass the Cup into the crowd, but that's obv a recipe for someone getting hurt.

At some point everybody ends up leaving.  Unlike the players, who will still be partying at noon tomorrow, a LOT of the people in the building have to be at work tomorrow.

Personally, would still be there in the MMArena should it have been Buffalo beating Buffalo West, work tomorrow be darned; but totally get that not everybody can set their own schedule.

"The Conn Smythe Trophy is awarded annually to the most valuable player (MVP) during the NHL’s Stanley Cup playoffs. It is named after Conn Smythe, the longtime owner, general manager, and head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Each year, at the conclusion of the final game of the Stanley Cup Final, members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association vote to elect the player deserving of the trophy."

Not accepting the award means he’s a good teammate and knows what really matters.

Eh, still believe he should've come out and at least let Bettman shake his hand over it, but also get why in this moment it was too difficult for him to do that.

He's the most recognizable face in the NHL to those like us who live and breathe it, but he plays in Edmonton and the casual fans that tune in for the "big events" only don't know much at all about him because the Eulers rarely get early US nationally broadcast games.

As crimes against hockey are concerned, not coming out is at worst a misdemeanor and likely only a traffic violation; but it still would've been nice for someone as revered as him to stay in his lane and not go speeding right out of the rink.

Bobrovsky only gave up 1 goal in the series winning game in each round, including the most important game. What did McDavid do tonight? 😒

Whatever McJesus did, it fit the "criteria" more than Bob's. And if it didn't, we should redefine what the "criteria" is until it does.

I didn’t write the criteria buddy. Nor am I the one who voted him the winner

Charles Barkley walking away from TNT's basketball desk.  Wonder if he'll be part of the ownership group that ends up getting that new team?  (Wouldn't bet against it.)

And personally, hate that Arizona lost its team, but hate the idea of expanding past 32 teams even more.  Right now, there is at LEAST 1 team currently in the league that will wait until 2056 to hoist the Stanley Cup for the next (or 1st) time.  Expanding that out is nuts.

At the end of the day, if you didn’t want to give it to McDavid this year, fine. You’d be wrong but w/e

But for gosh shakes just change the definition of the award to “most valuable player to the team who wins the cup” because if what McDavid did in a losing effort wasn’t enough then nothing reasonably is.

It shouldn’t be a consideration at all because it’s just insulting everyone’s intelligence to entertain that there’s a good-faith debate where a losing player can win it, when the stats can indisputably, so obviously point to one guy being the best and it still not matter.
