JujuFish Posted March 21 Report Posted March 21 I'll add another complaint (though not relevant to a written medium like this forum). It really rubs me the wrong way when I hear someone pronounce the plurals of bias and process with an -eez ending. Lots of words do get plurals like this: ellipsis, diagnosis, parenthesis, genesis, catharthis, metamorphosis, psychosis, synopsis, and many more. But these are all -sis words of Greek origin, which isn't the case for bias or process. This is something I mainly hear from otherwise well-educated people, which makes it baffling to me. It's like some form of pattern recognition gone wrong. 2 Quote

Dude you aren’t a 6’9” basketball phenomenon that was getting comps to MJ. You are biased. 1 Quote

ska-T Palmtown Posted December 17 Report Posted December 17 We'll see if this is allowed ... another one just caught my attention in a thread: "could care less" - so you COULD care LESS?? Proper usage: "couldn't care less" ... no names will be mentioned to spare those involved. 1 1 Quote

Proper usage: "couldn't care less" ... no names will be mentioned to spare those involved. I've thought about this and actually both can be correct. "Couldn't care less" means that someone's caring is at rock bottom; i.e., they don't care at all. But "could care less" can mean the same thing in a sarcastic, ironic sense. And personally, that second one seems to hit harder than the first- just the sound of it. Edited December 17 by Doohicksie 2 Quote
mjd1001 Posted December 17 Report Posted December 17 For me the thing that I notice is loose instead of lose. Also when somebody writes in all capital letters. It's something that rarely if ever happens on this forum, but it does happen other places and in social media. To me it's like..... So you really think you should do that as if what you have to say is more important than anyone else? That's how it comes across to me. But overall, unless something happens quite a bit I don't get too upset by it. Why? For the very reason I may have those same mistakes in this message I'm sending now..... When I am on my home computer typing on a keyboard, sometimes I type a little bit fast and I make some mistakes I don't recognize. I'll post the message and go back and read it and try to edit it to correct those mistakes. But other times like right now I'm on my phone. And when I'm on my phone to send a large message like this I don't type it. I use voice to text. When I use voice to text, as I'm sure others do, there are probably going to be a ton of grammatical errors and spelling errors, and sometimes it will just put the wrong words down. If I'm using voice to text it really means because I have limited time, which also means I have limited time to make any corrections.... Therefore, there will be errors like that.. I try not to go all grammar police on others unless it's really really bad and even then I don't really do that. For the same reason that I'm stating above... Someone might want to post something and they're in a hurry and they may not have a chance to correct things. Quote
GASabresIUFAN Posted December 17 Report Posted December 17 There is only one that truly annoys me……. re-sign vs resign. re-sign = a player signs a contract extension. In a sentence; the Sabres should try to re-sign Zucker and Greenway. resign = someone, like a GM, voluntarily leaves their job. In a sentence; Sabres GM Adams should resign immediately and spare owner Terry Pegula the embarrassment of firing another awful General Manager. 1 Quote

If you browse this forum, based on the ratio of correct "your" to "you're", my money is on people not thinking about how to use or not knowing how to use "couldn't care less". 1 Quote

Adding the "n't" to could softens the sound of the word. Could care less is stark and to the point. Couldn't care less seems contemplative and wishy-washy to me. Quote

Nor with that one in particular, but with other words, I'm actuall not sure should there be a space between them or not. Is it For check? Fore check? Forcheck? or For-check? So at times I end up using all of the, or if I don't now for sure I'll just stick the hypen in there anyway. Quote

I'll cede that part to you - but I will steadfastly maintain that most people saying "could care less" are not using it sarcastically, but out of not knowing it is not what they mean. Since this is the internet where the facts are made up and mean nothing, I will go with ... less than 10% of people are using it "ironically" or sarcastically. 1 2 Quote

I was sampling the internet and I think hyphens are probably less common than most people (myself included) use. I think of forehead when I get a little stuck on forecheck. "Fore" being the front or lead or most prominent of something, which checks out for forecheck. You could always pretend you are texting in the early 2000's and go with 4chek? Quote
