speaking of deep fakes -- that are somehow NOT deep fakes -- here's mcdermott making some bizarre half-baked playoff drought joke that is intended to ... well, i'm not sure ... be a poke in the ribs of kevyn adams?

But he's recounting a comment from years ago?

Give it a few listens. I had to listen to it 4 or 5 times to understand, as best I can.

I think he's making up a story - cracking wise? Because there's no way that Deonte Thompson was actually shouting about WNY's "palm trees" before the Colts snow game in 2017. But McDermott spins a yarn about Thompson saying that -- apparently so that McDermott can then talk about how there are in fact many (resilient!) palm trees all across WNY and can then link that "observation" to the end of an historic playoff drought.

Excuse me. Do I seem like someone who has time to listen to that clip over and over?

I'll be right back.

I'm just going to assume the palm tree comment was a jab. It was great.

The palm tree thing was never funny. Also, it’s not a good look for one successful part of your empire to be chiding another part of the org that is struggling.  Same team.  Friendly fire not needed.

It's not a good look for the Sabres, certainly. It's probably not a good look for Pegula, but what is he going to do about it? He's not going to Fire McDermott.

The Sabres deserve all the chiding they can get. They are a joke and we cover it that ad nauseum on this forum.  The palm tree comment from Adams was never funny, no. It was a perfect demonstration of a person who is out of touch. But, chirping him for saying it?  Full speed ahead.

If Pegula doesn't want his GM of his professional hockey franchise being chirped he should probably deal with the problem, not the symptom. Get a real GM.

I think it helps to recall that McDermott is a strange guy. Remember the reports regarding his 9/11 precision metaphor? I think there's a way that he meant this palm tree yarn to be funny, encouraging, and a little bit of tough love?

But, like I said: He's a strange guy.

The difference between McDermott and anyone else that the Sabres have hired under Pegula is vast.

McDermott said he had to own the drought, even though he didn't cause it, because owning it was the only way to end it.  McDermott and Beane methodically (but not hastily) removed every veteran that was not part of the solution.

What is interesting in this video is he mentions Kyle Williams and Jordan Poyer.   One old vet with drought stains, and one new vet with none.  Kyle was the vet that owned the drought and had all the right intentions to do his part to end it.  He was a really good player and a respected leader.  Keeping him was smart.  Sometimes the moves you don't make are the right ones.

Poyer was a 5th year player and entering his prime.  One of several vets brought in to immediately improve the talent on the team and to teach the younger players what a professional football player looks like and how a professional player prepares for work.   Poyer is also a guy with a fancy celebrity wife,  and yet he extended with Buffalo because they had a winning a team.   Showing us that winning is more important than glitz and glitter (palm trees and low taxes).    Poyer was the guy who last year was not medically cleared to fly to Kansas City, so he drove to KC by car and played in that game.  Huge respect to him.  Even if his game was declining, he was a guy that inspired his teammates.

Under Pegula, the Sabres have never yet had a POHO/GM/Coach that can do what McDermott and Beane did.  Which is to find the right player chemistry to help establish a winning team culture without compromise.

Adams refuses to use the Bills as guidance.  He references the Bills at times, but he continually misses the mark on what they did and how they did it.

I think that first statement above is absolutely true. The Bills have two complementary alphas leading the organization -- the so-called McBeane team. As a result, Terry's largely a supportive observer when it comes to football ops.

As for Adams' failure or refusal to use the Bills' rebuild as guidance, I think he's just incapable of charting and following a similar path.

The Bills and the Sabres are not the same team.  They could not be run any more differently.

The McDermott “palm tree” reference definitely struck me as bizarre.  If you’re going to make the joke, why go all the way back to 2017?  Because you don’t want to bring anyone in to the joke but yourself and a former player in the interest of not ruffling feathers too much?  So much effort for a joke and/or jab.  That said, I love it (assuming it was a jab).  McDermott, Beane and others have gone to great lengths to praise WNY and the fans.  I assume McDermott must cringe at GMKA for blaming anyone but himself for the recent failures of the Sabres organization.  As a WNY guy, it was a particularly weak showing by GMKA.

Good takes, all.

I've listened to substantially all of McDermott's post-game press conferences this season. Of late, he's gotten pretty emotional at times about how much he believes in the people of WNY, how much he identifies with them, how proud he is to represent them, how much he appreciates them, how much he thinks they're under-appreciated and misunderstood across the country. And so on.

At times, I've been like, "buddy, take it easy. you're laying it on sorta thick."

But I think he really believes all that stuff. I think it's a big piece of how he motivates and centers himself.

And so, by extension, I think that, when McDermott heard GM KA's "woe is me" routine about having Buffalo (I mean, blechk) as an undesirable franchise destination, McDermott was sorta pissed off. And strange as it is to say, he wanted to stand up for Buffalo.

Mayhaps Sean planted a palm seed deep inside KA?

"Perception and reality are not always the same. Spend a day, spend a week in Buffalo. Get around the people. Get around the city. Get around the energy of our city. People that say that, in my opinion, haven't spent that time and really don't want to spend that time. To me, that's on them. What more could you ask for from a city that, football, to me, is important to the city of Buffalo. That's not the case in every city. People want to pump palm trees and this and that and weather and this and that — come to Buffalo, where football's important to the people," said McDermott.

The year? 2019.

Now you know... the rest of the story.

Did anyone bother to listen to the second clip and put it in context? It was not a dig or a joke. It is what happened. They played Miami in Miami, where palm trees do grow. They had to win, and then get help to get in to the playoffs. That happened.

This has nothing to to with the Sabres or Kevyn Adams.

You people are broken,... and the Sabres did it to you.😂

Punch, the bolded is interesting. And couldn't agree more. I think one of the problems KA has is that having players who enjoy hanging out and having fun together is his idea of team chemistry. That really misses the mark, doesn't it? . The Bills by all accounts enjoy each other and have fun. But if someone is continuously f'ing up that individual won't much enjoy being in that locker room. Winning is too important to that team.

That is very, very interesting. Great pull!

Even so, McDermott's comment yesterday to the reporters -- words to the effect of "we have palm trees that grow around here, not sure people are aware of that" -- seemed trained on GM KA's recent remark.

I listened several times. I encourage you to listen again. McDermott starts talking about Deonte and the away Miami game when he was evaluating Deonte early in the day to see if he could go, but then veers back into the Colts snow game, then again back to the Miami away game, but then clearly says that Deonte was clamouring about "palm trees" prior to the Colts snow game in OP.

Which ... maybe he was?

But then listen to McDermott as he riffs off that. He says Deonte is "yelling to me, 'palm trees, coach,' -- this is before the Colts game -- because we had talked about the palm trees that grow around here -- maybe you guys don't see 'em, but they're all over the place."

When he says "around here," he's talking about Buffalo. And again: "Maybe you guys [the media] don't see 'em, but they're all over the place."

Deonte played for Baltimore and Cleveland before Buffalo.  The “palm trees” that Coach and Deonte are alluding to is the fun of playing a game in the snow, in front of great fans that care, and having a shot at ending the drought.

Palm trees were used as a metaphor for the “good things” in playing for a Buffalo team.

Possibly? Seems like you’re making a series of jumps there, though.

It’s simpler to listen to what McDermott said. He says Deonte was shouting “palm trees, coach!” in reference to the palm trees that grow around here — then McDermott says to the media “maybe you guys don’t see” the palm trees “but they’re all over the place” here in WNY.

How can that be anything but a jab at an affiliated team exec who recently and pathetically bemoaned Buffalo’s lack of palm trees?

I stand corrected. I agree, it was a dig. I missed where he said it was before the Colts game.

Allen should take a single snap vs. Pats and throw a bomb. Then leave the field and be handed the league MVP trophy...because he is. No point waiting.

I think he should take that single snap… at LB, stuff a single running play, then mouth to the camera “yeah, I can do that too”
